A MINECRAFT MOVIE hit a major milestone ahead of its digital release.

The film, which stars Jack Black and Jason Momoa, scored a spot among Warner Bros’ top 15 movies of all time at the worldwide box office.

Prior to this, HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS held the 15th spot at $876.1 million, but A MINECRAFT MOVIE took its place with $876.8 million. HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE sits ahead of it with $885.9 million.

Ironically, Black predicted that the film would be a “blockbuster” in an announcement for the film last year.

On Instagram, the actor said, “A new kind of block-buster. #MinecraftMovie – only in theaters 2025.”

“This movie will be GINORMOUS🔥” one user predicted in the comments. Another person said, “Finally! I’ve been waiting on this my whole life!”

Despite its massive box office success, A MINECRAFT MOVIE holds a 48% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. Fans, however, love it, giving the movie an 86% score.

Movieguide® gave it a -1 for content but celebrated some admirable qualities about the film.

“A MINECRAFT MOVIE is a live action fantasy adventure based on the bestselling video game of all time, MINECRAFT. Four misfits are pulled through a portal to Overworld, a world built of blocks and imagination, under the threat of destruction,” Movieguide®’s review reads.

The review notes it “has a strong redemptive, morally uplifting worldview where people find meaning, strength and courage in friendship to stand up and fight against the evil greedy queen of the nether world” but also has “too much action related violence, several light profanities, some rude and crude humor, along with scary images.”

The film’s digital release on platforms such as Apple TV and Amazon Prime will be May 13. Physical copies of the film, for those who still love their DVD collection, will go on sale in stores June 24.  All versions of the film will include behind the scenes footage and bonus features.

In an interview with Deadline, Warner Bros. executives Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy said that there are plans for A MINECRAFT MOVIE sequel.

“Imminently. The ink might not be dry on the deals yet, but imminently,” De Luca said.

He added, “We’re so proud of the performance of the new configuration and the people we promoted. They executed MINECRAFT flawlessly and we’re really excited about the future with the team we have.”

Time will tell if A MINECRAFT MOVIE will hold its record breaking spot and if it’s sequel will see the same success.
