AGT Winner Still Happy as High School Janitor: ‘The Same Person’
By Movieguide® Contributor
Richard Goodall, a 55-year-old janitor from Indiana, won Season 19 of AMERICA’S GOT TALENT. Today, he is still a janitor who loves singing.
“I’m doing singing things, but I’m still at the school. I’m still a janitor,” Goodall said in a recent interview with TODAY.
While he told the outlet “Not much has changed. I mean, I have a manager now, and at some point, I’ll probably have to take a leave of absence for a while,” he has musical projects in the works.
“I’m still at the school, but things are going on behind the scenes, you know, some concerts are popping up,” Goodall told NBC, who reported that he’s “happy” as a janitor. “I’m actually leaving tomorrow for Riverside, California, to do a festival lights thing…A lot of amazing things are just popping up, and so I’ll continue to work at the school until, you know, I can’t anymore.”
“I’m still the same person, same guy, not changed,” he emphasized.
He added, “I’m not saying that — I don’t want to say fame — but the fame is kind of wearing off, because they see me Monday through Friday.”
“Everybody says hi and asks me how I’m doing and what’s going on in my life. They just see me all the time, so it’s kind of, you know, it’s just Richard.”
Goodall stunned the judges when he sang Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing,” a motto he lives by.

“I didn’t have any expectations coming into the auditions and the same thing to the finals,” he told Fox News previously. “I just give it all and leave it all on the stage.”
“…I didn’t stop believing. I kept on singing. I kept on pushing,” he said.
He also encouraged others to never give up on their dreams, and if they’re interested in AGT, they should try out, even if they don’t think they have a chance.
“If somebody like me can try out, get through each round and then ultimately win the show, then anybody can…At this point in time, I think Season 20 is the perfect time for somebody who’s just a regular working person,” he said. “Try out, give it a shot, because everyone has dreams. Everybody has something inside of them that they want to get out. And, you know, Season 20! I mean, it’s the 20th season of AGT. There’s no more perfect time to try out than now.”
