Alex Kendrick’s Favorite Film Festival Is All About Family

By Movieguide® Contributor

Alex Kendrick shared his favorite film festival — one he and his extended family put on for themselves every year while on vacation together.

“So we’re enjoying our family film festival. We do it every year on vacation, and so all our kids are getting better and better at these short films,” Kendrick said. “Then all the moms judge. We just got together and watched about 10 short films done this week on vacation, and they’re funny, and they’re creative, and we love it. So the moms get to vote on different aspects of the films, and they give out awards at the end. It’s something we do every year, we love doing it, and we love watching our kids just bloom.”

This fun tradition took place this year just ahead of the release of the Kendrick brothers’ newest movie, THE FORGE. The movie reveals the impact that a strong, godly mentor can have on a person’s life regardless of their circumstances.

“Isaiah Wright has some growing up to do. A year out of high school with no plans for his future, Isaiah is challenged by his single mom and a successful businessman to start charting a better course for his life,” a synopsis of the movie reads. “Through the prayers of his mother and biblical discipleship from his new mentor, Isaiah begins to discover God’s purpose for his life is so much more than he could ever hope for or imagine.”

While providing viewers with an entertaining experience, the Kendrick brothers hope viewers engage with their upcoming movie for more than just pleasure. They want it to inspire viewers to evaluate their own lives and the places that might need change as they see themselves in these characters.

To encourage others to take discipleship seriously, the Kendrick brothers created a bible study and discussion guide to go along with the movie to help people engage with the story as a group.

THE FORGE releases to theaters on Aug. 23. Those interested in watching the trailer can do so here.

In honor of Father’s Day, the Kendrick Brothers, who created FIREPROOF and WAR ROOM, shared how their dad was an inspiration for them in each of their productions and revealed all of the father-son duos in their new movie, THE FORGE.

On the set of the Kendrick Brothers’ upcoming movie, THE FORGE, their “dad ending up leading a devotion, talking about discipleship,” which is the theme of the movie.

In their first movie, FLYWHEEL, there’s a scene with a man who has a cane and prays over his son. In FACING THE GIANTS, there’s a character called Larry Childers, who has multiple sclerosis and is in a wheelchair. In FIREPROOF, a man mentors the lead character. In OVERCOMER, there’s a man who prayed for people from a hospital bed.

All of these characters were based on the brothers’ dad, Larry Kendrick.
