McCullough is joined by Keyla Richardson and Hannah Harper as the last three finalists on the singing competition show. Richardson and Harper have also been open about their Christian faith.
“We both have grown up in church and had the opportunity to share our testimony, and it was nice to be able to have it on this platform,” Harper told Us Weekly during a joint interview with Richardson. “It was an honor.”
One of the ways AMERICAN IDOL contestants got to platform their faith was the “Songs of Faith Night” episode; each contestant sang a song centered on spirituality, hope and worship.
“I grew up in the church. I know so many songs, so it was kind of hard to pick, but I wanted to pick something everyone could relate to,” Richardson, who performed “Jireh” by Elevation Worship and Maverick City, told the outlet.
She continued, “I wanted everyone to worship with me. That’s my heart right there. That’s where I find myself in worship a lot of times. When they said ‘songs of faith,’ that was right up my alley.”
“I’m glad that we can be open about our faith,” Richardson shared. “I’m glad that everybody is OK with it, and we’re OK with it…I love God, and that’s who I love.”
Harper added, “I think we’ve always done that. There are more eyes watching now.”
AMERICAN IDOL launched “Songs of Faith” last season and decided to bring it back this year due to its huge success with viewers.
“It was a discussion that started at a dinner with the judges, some people from ABC, and myself,” AMERICAN IDOL showrunner and executive producer Megan Michaels Wolflick told Rolling Stone. “We watch myriad Christmas specials. We don’t ever see a faith-based spring Easter-style show. So we kind of embraced that. It was a special show, and people loved it; the ratings were pretty amazing.”
AMERICAN IDOL fans are excited to watch McCullough, Richardson and Harper continue to share their faith onstage!
