Australian high jumper Nicola McDermott is celebrating her “best season yet” and giving all the glory to God.
“Best season yet,” McDermott posted on Instagram. “International competition heights averaged 2m for the first time, it is a dream come true!”
She continued, “I’ve learned that the people that share this sport journey are the treasures that are irreplaceable, the heights and medals can come and go, but the gold of these relationships remain.”
“For my dearest family, friends, community, supporters and fellow athletes – thank you for who you are and all you do,” McDermott wrote. “To God be the honour, glory and praise for all this season has been, and all that is to come.”
McDermott has previously spoken about her faith and how it strengthens her throughout her athletic career.
“Knowing I am with God,” she told The Sydney Morning Herald. “He has been with me every single training session and I am carrying a message bigger than myself. He is going to make this new.”
McDermott also spoke about how her faith carried her through her first Olympic Games in 2021.
“In the Olympic Games people saw my performance, but most people didn’t know about all the prayer meetings and all the things I was doing in the Olympic Village outside of that,” the athlete told Eternity News. “The fruit of that was the joy and confidence of seeing what God was doing inside the village, knowing the impact I was having on those athletes.”
She continued, “I was fearless because I knew when I was pursuing the highest thing that I could do in that Olympic Games, that even if I didn’t make it, my identity in Christ meant that I was more than enough.”
