Baylor University’s newest Vice President and Diector of Athletics Doug McNamee shared at a press conference the importance of trusting in “God’s plan.”

“I lost my mom a couple years ago, lost my dad three months ago and Baylor was always at the root,” McNamee began. “So, fortunate that they got to see some amazing memories.”

McNamee then shared the story of how he prepared to speak in front of the university’s President.

“When I got the opportunity and the call to come speak with President Livingstone in the committee, you know, I had an hour carved out in my time and and was ready to go prep,” McNamee explained. “And I said, ‘You know what, man, I’ve had 27 years to prep for this conversation. There’s no prep needed.’ And I went over and saw my dad and mom’s headstone at the cemetery, which is not far away, and just sat with them and just reflected.

“And I tell you that that peace and that calm and that just trust in God’s plan to walk into that conversation with the President and the committee gave me all the trust and the confidence that I need,” he continued. “And I walked out of there and I said, may God’s will be done. I left it on the field. I believe strongly in my vision and what I can do for this university. But if there’s somebody better, all the trust in the world for the president and her decision and Baylor is in great hands.”

McNamee graduated from Baylor and now “returns to Baylor after successful stints as President of Waco-based Magnolia, the nationally recognized lifestyle and media company founded by Baylor alums Chip and Joanna Gaines, and most recently as President of the reimagined Field & Stream with country music superstars Eric Church and Morgan Wallen as investors,” the press release from Baylor reads.

“Doug’s familiarity with Baylor and his recent experience as the chief executive of two national lifestyle and media companies will serve him well as we prioritize increasing revenues, expanding external NIL opportunities for our student-athletes and growing our brand in this new era of college athletics while also engaging our passionate fanbase,” President Livingstone said of McNamee. “Doug is incredibly authentic and engaging, and he will connect with the entire Baylor Family, from our high-level donors to our Bear Foundation members and the Waco community. He fully embraces Baylor’s distinct Christian mission, and I look forward to working with him as he guides our student-athletes, coaches, staff and fans into the future.”

McNamee could have prepared for the talk with Livingston differently, but instead he decided to trust in God’s plan and spend time with his parents at their grave site. Through his trust in God, McNamee was named the newest Vice President and Director of Athletics at Baylor University.
