As the Denver Broncos defeated the Buffalo Bills in a 33-30 overtime win on Sunday, quarterback Bo Nix casually limped off the sideline.

While many assumed he just twisted his ankle, after the game the Broncos head coach Sean Payton informed the media that Nix suffered a season-ending broken ankle.

“Not good news,” Payton began the post-game press conference. “On the second to last play in overtime, Bo fractured a bone in his right ankle. He’s scheduled to have surgery Tuesday of this week, which will put him out for the rest of the season. He said he’s ready to go.”

“It was the second to last play before he threw the pass to Mims. Birmingham is where he’ll have the surgery with Dr. Walrip and I don’t really think there’s any other questions. You know, in other words, this just is what it is, and we felt like it’d be best to just tell everyone now,” Payton added.

While Nix has yet to address the media, his wife, Izzy, shared a photo on her Instagram story and wrote, “I snuck this picture because I wanted to remember this moment forever. The joy, followed by the heartbreak, followed by watching each teammate and coach come to this little corner and sit by Bo’s side.”

“God could have placed us anywhere, and I’m so grateful He chose Denver. He is the perfect Author of Bo’s story and we cannot wait to see what He has in store for this team,” she said before adding, “We’ll be on the front row cheering the loudest!!!”

Izzy’s post included 2 Corinthians 4:16-17, which reads, “Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.”

Jarrett Stidham is expected to replace Nix as the Broncos play for the AFC Championship.

“I would say this, in fairness to what you’ve seen, which is very limited: He’s ready,” Payton said of the veteran quarterback, per the Denver Broncos. “He’s ready. I said this at the beginning of the season, I feel like I’ve got a [No. 2 quarterback] that’s capable of starting for a number of teams, and I know he feels the same way. Watch out. Just watch. He’s experienced, he’s played in games. They’re different type players to some degree.”

With his faith in God, his support system and his teammates, Nix is sure to bounce back stronger after this injury.

The Broncos will face Drake Maye and the New England Patriots on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. for the AFC Championship.
