Comedian Anjelah Johnson-Reyes pondered God’s presence in seasons of waiting and change.

“Does God slow down in our, like, valley to second half of like these doors are opening, or do we get comfortable and coast because maybe we’re tired, maybe we’re jaded?” she asked her “Funjelah” podcast guest Dave Barnes.

Johnson-Reyes admitted that these questions relate to seasons she has gone through in her own life.

“I’m thinking my own life, in my own career, and how my 20s and my 30s, oh my gosh, opportunity…Oh, hey, random producer, oh yes, I’ll headline your festival. Blah, blah, blah, blah, like, boom. Just so many opportunities,” she recalled.

But opportunity doesn’t last forever, and when that time of being in demand passed, she was left in a state of confusion.

“You get to, like, a certain either age or stage, and it feels like those kinds of things aren’t flying at you like they were in your early season,” Johnson-Reyes explained. “And I’m wondering, is it Him or is it me? Is it both? Is it my faith? Is it just this is how life is, and you’re in this?”

People in the comment section chimed in on the topic.

“I think the devil loves to distract people and sometimes we think opportunities are all from God. Discernment is key in all stages of life,” one person said. Another added, “You’re comfortable in coasting, seek out [God’s] word every single day. It will never steer you wrong.”

Johnson-Reyes has openly spoken about her faith after gaining popularity in 2008 when she played “Bon Qui Qui” on Mad TV.

“I do a joke in my stand-up where I say I’m a Christian, but I’m not a Christian comedian,” she said previously. “I think that’s definitely how I see my acting. I’m an actor who happens to be a Christian.”

She later added, “I live my life not to please my pastor or my church or fellow Christians. I live my life according to my own convictions and morals and core values and principals and a lot of times that’s not going to add up to other Christians.”

Like Johnson-Reyes, we can all find ourselves wondering why God removes seemingly good parts of our lives. However, the Bible explains in Ecclesiastes 3:1, “To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.” That means God has a good plan for every season of life, whether or not we can see it.
