Dean Cain Explains How Becoming a Father ‘Changed’ Him

Who is Dean Cain’s “favorite person on the whole planet?” His son Christopher.

The SUPERMAN actor welcomed his son in 2000 with then-girlfriend Samantha Torres. The pair agreed to joint custody in 2003, and Cain was granted full custody in 2011.

“I was 33 years old [when Christopher was born], and I saw the first moment he entered this world, and it changed me,” he said in a Facebook video. “Suddenly having someone more important, a human being more important to me than me. Someone that I would, without a hesitation, give my life for. All of those things sort of make sense to me.”

When Cain and Torres decided that he should have full custody, the actor explained that it did affect his career, but he wouldn’t have had it any other way.

“I turned down being one of, if not the highest-paid actor on television, for a show that ended up going six years,” Cain told Fox News. “The contract was very attractive. But I was in the middle of a custody dispute, so I could either be a father or take that job. It took me a split second, not even a split second [to make the choice].”

He continued, “As soon as I was presented the choice, it was like, ‘I’m going to be a dad.’ My father adopted me when I was 4, and I know how important that was for my life.”

“Nothing in my life has been as big a factor as having my father there to raise me. Fathers in the home is such a huge, important issue here in America and all throughout the world,” Cain said. “And I just think it’s hugely important, and I would never change what I’ve done in terms of being a father vs. a career.”

In an interview with Christian Headlines, Cain said that his relationship with Christopher also changed the way he chose acting roles.

“I’m a single father, my son is 22 years old…I started making kids movies when he was a little kid,” he explained. “Not all the films I make are faith-based and they’re not all inspirational, but a large majority are because I want my son to be able to see those films, I want him to learn from them. I want him to watch the way I’m living my life and the choices that I’m making and say, ‘I see why he’s doing that. I see why he wants to help out.’”
