A new twist on the Cinderella story heads to Disney+, with a little help from pop star Jennifer Lopez.

“[The series] has landed at Disney+, we hear,” Deadline reported, adding, “The project remains in development.”

Deadline also revealed there was “a bidding war between Disney and Amazon” for the show, which will tell the story of Cinderella from the perspective of the fairy godparents. There’s no word yet on who will star in the series, and Lopez has not confirmed whether or not she will appear in the show.

The show was first announced in 2022, helmed by Skydance Television, Lopez’s Nuyorican Productions and Concord Originals.

“The story of Cinderella is as timeless now as ever,” said Bill Bost, President of Skydance Television. “This aspirational story of romance, unconventional families, and the surprising power of wishes has inspired audiences around the world for centuries.”

He added that he is “thrilled to be working with” Lopez, as well as Rachel Shukert, the series’ writer, and The Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization.

“Rodgers & Hammerstein elevated the already magical story of Cinderella with their iconic music that has attracted legends of screen and stage throughout its many beloved, award-winning iterations over the years,” Sophia Dilley, Senior Vice President of Development and Production at Concord Originals, said. “Our partnership with Skydance and Nuyorican on this project is the first step of many towards our collective goal of championing timeless classics for a new generation and Rachel is the perfect voice to expand upon this story in a contemporary way.”

This new show is part of Skydance and Concord’s ongoing partnership to develop several of Concord’s musical catalog, including a modern-day version of OKLAHOMA!

This is also the latest in a series of Cinderella revamps. Disney already brought the fairy tale back to the big screen in 2015, with a live-action version starring Lily James and Richard Madden. Amazon also put their own spin on the story with 2021’s CINDERELLA musical, starring pop star Camila Cabello.

“It was one of those things that felt like God handcrafted it for me and was, like, ‘Here you go.’” Cabello told Variety of her casting in the movie. “I just couldn’t say no. It’s honestly a dream for me. And also a little bit terrifying.”

There’s no word yet on when we can expect this new twist on the beloved fairy tale to hit Disney+, but Cinderella fans can’t wait to see a new imagining of the story on their screens again!
