Dolly Parton’s Movieguide® Award-Winning Episode Nominated for Emmy

By Tess Farrand, Associate Content Editor

DOLLY PARTON’S HEARTSTRINGS: “These Old Bones” just secured an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Television Movie. The series previously earned the Faith & Freedom Award® for Television at the 2020 Movieguide® Awards.

“All my life I’ve written songs that tell stories and I always thought that my songs would make good movies [and] sure enough [Netflix] fell for the idea,” Parton told Movieguide® TV Host, Evy Baehr Carroll.

“I have a lot of faith, and that’s what gets me through my life, it always has,” Parton said.

Though “These Old Bones” is an episode of HEARTSTRINGS, it’s length qualifies it as a TV movie for the upcoming Emmy Awards.

The 72nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards will take place at the Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles on Sunday, September 20. ABC is broadcasting the ceremony, and Jimmy Kimmel has been announced as host.

According to Movieguide®’s review:

“These Old Bones” is the first episode of DOLLY PARTON’S HEARTSTRINGS, a Netflix anthology series. Mary is an old woman with a gift of prophecy, whose prophetic warnings to neighbors challenge a powerful timber company trying to buy their land. A pretty female lawyer from the company tries to get Mary to stop advising the neighbors. Mary, in a delightful down-home way, refuses. She notes how pretty Miss Carson is and prays for her. However, Miss Carson tries to silence Mary by using laws against witchcraft. The resulting trial is full of great moments.

“These Old Bones” elicits humor, laughter, tears, jeopardy, concerns, and a whole plethora of emotions. This is exactly what a movie or television program should do. From a Christian point of view, the movie’s setup makes you concerned that it’s going to support occultism or witchcraft. The writing is so good that, by the end of the drama, you realize Mary has a gift from God, and you discover deeper things about each major character. “These Old Bones” is one of the best crafted television dramas ever made.

HEARTSTRING’s competition for the Emmy includes, AMERICAN SON, BAD EDUCATION, EL CAMINO: A BREAKING BAD MOVIE, and UNBREAKABLE KIMMY SCHMIDT: KIMMY VS. THE REVEREND.

HEARTSTRINGS is streaming on Netflix.
