HGTV star Erin Napier shared how her daughters feel about their parents being on a TV show during a recent discussion on “The Heirloom” podcast with other moms from Laurel, Mississippi.
“Helen and Mae don’t care at all about HOME TOWN. They don’t care about it,” she explained. “When I tell you they don’t care about it at all, they don’t even want to tell anyone that’s what we do. Like they don’t want anyone to know about HOME TOWN.”
Erin and her husband Ben’s daughters are 7 and 3.
She continued, “I can see Helen being like, it’s career day at school, and it’s like ‘my mom’s an accountant,’ ‘my dad’s a dentist,’ and Helen’s like ‘my parents don’t have jobs, they can’t come,’” she laughed.
Napier added, “She would be like ‘mommy goes to old houses.’ She like downplays the whole thing which I actually love.”
The home reno expert also explained how her kids think that every parent, no matter the career, has their own TV show.
“Our kids man, they’re messed up,” she joked. “They think everybody does this, that everybody has a TV show. So, if you’re an accountant then there is someone filming it.”
It makes sense why Helen and Mae wouldn’t be interested in their parent’s TV show, as they have been raised to focus on real life and hands-on activities instead of screens.
Napier previously said of her girls, “I feel like when our kids have more opportunity to be engaged in the real world and learning skills and finding their talents, that’s where self-assurance comes from. And the opposite of finding self-assurance is in social media. Everything that tears down our self-confidence and self-assurance lives there.”
She added, “So that’s really what we want to focus on is helping our girls find their gifts in the real world, and when they’re older, much older, I think they’ll be mentally prepared for what social media is and the tool that it can be.”
Until then, the Napiers focus on quiet and intentional time together at home.
Last fall, Erin Napier posted a sweet photo of Mae cuddling with her dad, with the caption “what safe looks like.”
Fans in the comment section loved seeing the sweet moment. One said, “Beautiful. My wish is that all children could feel as safe and loved. ❤️” Another person added, “Would be wonderful for all children to know this kind of love and safety. Very blessed.”
The Napiers certainly do a wonderful job raising their daughters in a family focused on being together, even if that means they don’t quite understand what their parents do for a living.
