Eva Mendes Quit Acting to Raise Her Family: ‘No-Brainer’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Eva Mendes revealed that she quit acting to raise her family, something she doesn’t regret.

“It was like a no-brainer. [And I was like], I’m so lucky if I could have this time with my children,” she told Entertainment Tonight.

Mendes shares daughters Esmeralda Amada, 9, and Amada Lee, 7, with fellow actor Ryan Gosling.

“Acting takes you on location. It takes you away,” Mendes explained.

“It was almost just like a non-verbal agreement that it was like, ‘OK, he’s going to work and I’m going to work. I’m just going to work here,'” she continued. “He went and he did his job. He just happens to be really good at his job. And he did it and he came home.”

Mendes and Gosling have been together since 2012. The duo met while on set of THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES, and their relationship grew from there.

“I have never experienced anything like that,” Mendes said of filming with Gosling. “The way he works, his commitment to his craft, how he wants to make everything as best as it could be, and that means making his co-stars as best as they could be… But unfortunately, or fortunately, there is only one Ryan. So I pretty much stopped just acting after that.”

She is open to returning to her career but would only appear in “nice and clean” projects.

“I have such a short list of what I will do,” the actress explained while appearing on THE VIEW in 2022. “Like before kids, I kind of was up for anything — I mean, if it was a fun project. But now I won’t do violence, I don’t want to do sexuality, I don’t want to do… the list is short.”

However, being a mom is her top priority.

“I’m an actress, I’ve designed clothes, I’ve done a number of different things. But this is the most creative thing, is to create life with them,” she said previously.

Movieguide® previously reported on why Mendes keeps her kids away from the internet:

Actress Eva Mendes just shared why she’s keeping her kids away from the internet.

“When my kids ask me if they’re old enough to go on the internet, social media or anything requiring wifi,” Mendes captioned a GIF of herself shaking her head disapprovingly.

Her followers shared their thoughts on her rules in the comments section, with one writing, “Your [sic] smart @evamendes. I have limited it a lot for my now 10-year-old but feel like your way is better.”

The actress replied, “I’m just sharing what I feel now, but I know it’s gonna get harder as they get older. So, I hear ya, mama. I let my kids use the iPad to make movies and watch films I’ve downloaded, but I don’t have internet access on the iPad. Lotsa love your way, fellow mama!”
