Former NFL Defensive end Josh Mauro died on April 23. He was 35.

“With many tears and broken hearts, yet anchored in the unshakable certainty that our precious Josh Mauro is now healed and made new — living in the presence of the Lord — we humbly covet your prayers as our family walks through the devastating loss of our amazing son, brother, uncle, grandson and friend,” Mauro’s father, Greg Mauro, shared on Facebook. “On Thursday, April 23rd, Josh breathed his last breath on this earth and his first breath in heaven.”

“The Lord has been our strength in this unimaginable moment. Your prayers for continued strength and comfort mean more to us than words could ever express,” the athlete’s father added.

An official cause of death has not been announced.

The undrafted NFL defensive player was originally drafted by the Steelers in 2014 but would end up in Arizona with the Cardinals for four years.

“We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of Josh Mauro,” the Cardinals shared on social media. “Our thoughts are with his family, friends and all who knew him. We extend our deepest condolences to everyone grieving this loss.”

Fans and acquaintances also offered their condolences in the comment section.

“It was such a pleasure to cover him and always the kindest, most respectful man! This gutted me 🥺,” one person wrote.

Someone else commented, “This was our neighbor, he was a very nice guy! 😢”

“Prayers go out to Josh Mauro and his family. Had the opportunity to be around Josh for several years with BA. Always in shape, always was ready to go wherever he got that call. One of the things I respected most about him. You could depend on him,” Adrian Wilson, who was in the Cardinals’ front office during Mauro’s time in Arizona, said on X.

According to Fox News Digital, during his time in the NFL, “Mauro collected 83 combined tackles and four sacks across 55 games (29 starts). He worked himself into a starting role in 2016, where he saw seven tackles for loss across 15 games. Mauro also spent time with the New York Giants and then-Oakland Raiders before a return to the Cardinals for the 2020 and 2021 seasons.”

Mauro played in 80 NFL games where he recorded “five sacks, 130 combined tackles (20 for loss), two forced fumbles and five passes defended.”

While Mauro’s death is a tragedy, his family trust that he is now in the arms of Jesus. Continue to keep his family and friends in your prayers.
