FREAKY FRIDAY Gets Sequel 20 Years Later

By Movieguide® Contributor

The 2003 hit Disney movie FREAKY FRIDAY is coming back 20 years later for round two.

The Hollywood Reporter revealed that “Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan, who starred in the original, are in negotiations to reprise their roles as the mother and daughter combo who find themselves switching bodies and lives.”

The first movie follows “Tess Coleman (Curtis), a single mother and uptight psychiatrist, and her rebellious teenage daughter, Anna (Lohan). Constantly at odds with each other due to their differing perspectives on life, they find themselves magically swapping bodies after a mysterious fortune cookie incident at a Chinese restaurant.”

Part of Movieguide®’s review reads:

FREAKY FRIDAY stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan as a mother and teenage daughter who find themselves trapped in each other’s body. Only an act of selfless love can bring them back. MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older children because of the movie’s occult fortune cookie gimmick and light foul language, which are mitigated by some redemptive and morally uplifting elements.

The sequel is set to be directed by Golden Globe winner and Emmy nominee Nisha Ganatra.

Ganatra took to Instagram on Tuesday to post a casting call for Anna’s daughter, who will be named Harper Coleman. The casting call reads:

14 years old, Anna’s daughter, Harper is a teen surfer with California vibes with a sharp sense of humor. Harper is in a bit of a mood these days because her longtime single mom is set to marry British restaurateur Eric Davies. If that wasn’t bad enough, Eric comes with his own 14-year-old daughter, sharp tongued Lily. Harper and Lily do not see eye to eye. Harper would like to see things go her way and use her intelligence to stop this marriage from ever happening.

The post encourages anyone who believes they fit the role to apply.

In an interview last year with Entertainment Weekly, Curtis expressed her excitement about seeing a sequel to the film.

“Oh, it’ll happen. For sure. Oh, for sure. There’s no question,” she said.

The original FREAKY FRIDAY film released in 1972 and starred Barbara Harris and Jodie Foster.  The movie was remade several other times before Lohan and Curtis’ version.
