How Loretta Lynn’s Granddaughter Tayla Lynn Broke Free From the Darkness of Addiction

By Movieguide® Contributor

“There was a time when I didn’t want to wake up and see tomorrow,” singer Tayla Lynn told People magazine in 2021. “When you’re hiding from God, the last thing you want to do is see the sunrise.”

The granddaughter of famed country singer Loretta Lynn turned to alcohol soon after her parents divorced and her mother married an abusive man. She battled addiction and demons starting when she was a teenager. In an interview with The 700 Club, Lynn shares her journey from addiction to freedom in Christ.

“The alcohol stole my integrity fast. Things that I can’t imagine a 15, 16-year-old girl doing, it just took away whatever felt like was good in me, was tainted.”

Though she grew up surrounded by Christian family members with strong faith, Lynn struggled to break free from the “dark energy that was leading everything [she] was doing.”

After 14 years of drug and alcohol use, Lynn was arrested for a hit and run in Nashville, and while in rehab, begged God for help. She says this moment of surrender jumpstarted her new life:

“I just prayed. I said, ‘God, I have to be done. And I have no idea how not to crave these drugs. I don’t know how to stop, but I feel like this is my last chance. Please help me. If you show up, then I’m done.’ I said, ‘I’m surrendering.’ I was released from that bondage right then. God just took the chains, and they were gone. Now, I still had some physical cravings for the drugs and alcohol, but God was right there, and it just felt like I let God just cover me.”

Lynn stays active in country music is currently touring with Tre Conway, grandson of country legend Conway Twitty. The new duo honors their grandparents’ music in an “intimate evening of music and storytelling.”
