THE BAD GUYS 2 director Pierre Perifel explained how his new movie explores the difficulties of reinventing yourself and that labels only define a person if they let them.

“It’s the second step of that big change that the Bad Guys made in the first movie. And because that second step is pretty tricky, we’re also exploring the idea of doubting,” Perifel told Movieguide®’s Kaelii Williams. “You know, doubting your choices and sometimes want[ing] to reverse course and come back to who you used to be because it was easier, it was more comfortable. But, in the end, of course, you know, our Bad Guys go through and just keep persevering to get what they deserve.”

While this message resonates with any person who has ever decided to change how they live, the story also explores how labels and can and cannot define us, something that everyone experiences at some point.

“In terms of thematic, of course, it’s really just like when talking as a family just being able to say that labels are not what defines you,” Perfiel said. “They are just labels, and then deep down, you’re not that person, you’re not that label necessarily. And even if people have a hard time seeing that, keep persevering and keep hoping that, you know, if you make the right choices, if you distinguish yourself and just make the right actions, eventually it’s going to pay off.”

These lessons are important for Christians to understand because when we make changes in our lives to become more like Christ, it can take a long time for those in our lives to recognize the difference. Because of this, Movieguide® gave THE BAD GUYS 2  a strong +1 rating; a portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:

THE BAD GUYS 2 is funny and exciting. However, the plot is a bit convoluted. The characters keep uncovering new subplots to get to the finale. Happily, THE BAD GUYS 2 has a strong moral worldview about overcoming temptation and doing good no matter what. However, the movie has some strong cartoon violence, lots of jeopardy and some parts that may be too scary for younger children. THE BAD GUYS 2 is also very high energy and fast paced. So, if you or your child are sensitive to that, please be mindful.

These lessons have resonated well with audiences, and the movie has had a strong release, grossing $44 million at the global box office during its opening weekend. This places is roughly on par with the opening of the first movie, which went on to gross over $250 million during a weak box office year in 2022.

Hopefully audiences will continue to support this uplifting movie and inspire Hollywood to continue to bring movies with moral lessons to life.
