Joanna Gaines Shares Favorite Wedding Memory: ‘I [Couldn’t] Wait to Be in That Car With Chip’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Joanna Gaines is sharing her favorite moment from her wedding with her husband Chip, and it might not be what you would expect.

“My favorite moment is when we said goodbye to everybody, got in the limo, and ate so much food!” Gaines laughed

“I just remember, when we got there, I saw how good the food looked and I asked my mom, ‘No matter what, will you just put some food in a container and put it in the car?’” she continued.

“So we did our thing, we did our dance, we did all the things that you’re supposed to do at a wedding. And all I kept saying is, I can’t wait to be in that car with Chip headed to our honeymoon,” Gaines shared. “And the second that door shut, I was like, ‘Thank God, this is why I’m here. I just wanna be with you and I wanna eat.’”

Joanna and Chip have been married for almost 20 years, but the memories of that special day still remain fresh in her mind.

“Weddings are kind of scripted and you’re doing a lot,” she explained. “You can forget why you’re really there. And for me, I was really there because I wanted to be with Chip. It will always be my favorite memory — when that limo door shut and we just ate like kids with our hands. It was Beef Wellington, mashed potatoes and two different kinds of cake.”

Movieguide® previously reported on the Gaines’ marriage:

One of the most beloved couples on television, Chip and Joanna Gaines, didn’t always see eye-to-eye in their relationship.

In the new book What Makes a Marriage Last, Chip and Joanna revealed how the early days of their marriage was full of fights.

“We can both go at it,” said Chip. “I’ve got a fiery personality, and early on, I would bark at her. She once said to me, ‘Just because you’re the loudest doesn’t make you right.’”

Finally, he realized yelling wasn’t going to solve any problems.

In the book, Chip explains, “A year or two into our marriage, I thought, ‘I don’t want to raise my voice like that.’ And we both asked ourselves, ‘Do we want to pull against each other like this, or do we want to be pulling together?’”

For this Christian couple, divorce wasn’t on the table.

“We made a pact early on that we would never talk about divorce,” said Chip. “So, if either of us is never going to leave, then how are we going to figure out a problem that seems impossible?

“So, Jo and I had a subconscious little handshake that said we would never pull against each other no matter what—because life is so hard. We can’t be fighting each other and the world simultaneously.”

In order to solve their fighting problem, the HGTV stars learned to trust one another.

Initially, the couple brushed aside their trust issues, Joanna said, until they realized how it impacted their fights.

“I think we both realized pretty quickly that we weren’t fighting about who was right and who was wrong; it was more about, ‘Hey you’re not trusting me right now,’” Joanna said. “And when I learned to trust him, my life turned from black-and-white to color.”

Chip echoed his wife’s realization, “I just realized that if I jumped into something, she was going to catch me.”
