Reba McEntire’s REBA costar JoAnna Garcia Swisher got candid about what the country star is like in real life.
“You have this person that’s just such an icon, she’s the queen, and then she’s also like a mom to me,” Swisher revealed in an interview with The Blast. “And she was in it with us. She was doing a sitcom for the first time and dove in fearlessly.”
The pair worked on the sitcom together from 2001-2007, an opportunity that Swisher calls a “dream come true.”
“It was such a pivotal moment in my life. I was in my early 20s, and we spent so much time together,” she shared. “It was cool to see someone who had achieved so much in other areas of entertainment be so eager to try something new. Her fearlessness is something I’ll forever admire. She was in it with us.”
She explained that even off-screen, McEntire is inspiring. “She’s just a real humble, good human. She doesn’t take herself too seriously. She’s all heart. I’m in awe of her.”
Swisher says the two “talk all the time. We are very, very close,” and she fondly recalls her time on the show.
“I look back on the show and remember Steve [Howey] cracking me up or trying so hard to keep a straight face,” she said. “Melissa [Peterman] knocking Steve over the head with a bat, on and off screen, still makes me laugh. We had a lot of fun.”
Swisher played Cheyenne, McEntire’s oldest daughter on the show, who faced the challenges of a teen pregnancy.
Her costars have been part of her life ever since. In 2010, McEntire, Peterman and Rich helped her celebrate her wedding. Entertainment Now reported that “McEntire and Peterman both stepped in to be bridesmaids while Rich officiated the ceremony.”
Swisher previously said that McEntire and Rich stepped in after her own parents died.
Back in March, Swisher took to Instagram to celebrate the country singer’s birthday.
“It fills my heart to celebrate this icon, 👸🏼, friend, mentor, tv mamma, favorite auntie, and utterly wonderful human always, but especially today on such a meaningful birthday. Love you @reba ❤️” she said.

People commented on the sweet friendship between the two women.
“The way you guys really looked like mother and daughter! Happy birthday Reba ❤️” one person said. Another user added, “I love Reba both the Show and the Actress! Also, I love your character Cheyenne, she’s my favorite character on Reba!!”
McEntire’s personality both on and off screen is a testament to why we should be kind to everyone, regardless of their position or status.
