Why Kristoffer Polaha Calls THE SHIFT ‘Different Than Anything Else’
By Movieguide® Contributor
WONDER WOMAN 1984 actor Kristoffer Polaha stars in Angel Studios’ new movie, THE SHIFT, and shared his excitement for the project ahead of its premiere.
“In this modern-day retelling of Job, Kevin Garner (Kristoffer Polaha) embarks on a journey across worlds and dimensions to reunite with Molly (Elizabeth Tabish), his true love. The narrative unfolds as a dystopian drama and sci-fi thriller, where a mysterious adversary, The Benefactor (Neal McDonough), disrupts Kevin’s reality. Faced with infinite worlds and impossible choices, Kevin must navigate through an alternate reality, resisting The Benefactor’s tempting offer of wealth and power. As survival hangs in the balance, Kevin fights to return to the familiar world he cherishes and the woman he loves,” a synopsis of the movie reads.
“Working on THE SHIFT has been different than anything else I’ve ever worked on because I’ve never worked on a crowdsourced picture before,” Polaha said in a video posted on Angel Studios’ Instagram.
“Angel Studios is breaking the mold and charging into new territory in a pretty winning way,” he continued. “It’s kind of impressive to be on a set that has already been financed by the fan base that wants to see it be made. And so you know who your audience is. You know who you’re telling the story for.”
“And then, even crazier is that people were flying in from all over the world who had supported the movie to be extras and to be background players,” he concluded. “And it was kind of awesome to meet the financiers and to see how enthusiastic they were for the project. It was awesome.”
THE SHIFT marks Angel Studios’ first original feature movie.
“The creative ethos at Angel fostered the opportunity to shape this unique blend of sci-fi, romance, and allegory,” producer Ken Carpenter said of the movie. “They gave us the runway to make a film that charts new territory.”
So far, Angel Studios has sold over 131,000 tickets with a goal to sell 150,000 for the premiere on Dec. 1.
A piece of Movieguide®’s review for THE SHIFT reads:
THE SHIFT is a science fiction movie with a fantasy twist. Kevin Garner loses his job on Wall Street during the 2008 financial crisis. That day, he meets his future wife, Molly. They know every marriage has problems, but they marry anyway. They grow apart when their young son wanders off one day and disappears. Kevin urges Molly to have faith. Then, the Devil offers to make Kevin rich and powerful, if he works for him. Kevin just starts praying, and the Devil flees. However, Kevin is now stuck on a totalitarian world in another universe. He searches for a way to escape and return to Molly.
THE SHIFT is one of the most moving, inventive, compelling, and powerful faith-based movies ever made. The writing, acting and directing are superb. THE SHIFT has a strong Christian, moral worldview. It contains strong allegorical, overt and beautiful references to God, Scripture, the Resurrection, and the Empty Tomb. The hero prays and rebuffs the Devil. However, THE SHIFT has some action violence where people are shot and alcohol use. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for pre-teenage children.
