NCIS: ORIGINS’ second season will highlight a Gibbs trait we’re all familiar with from the main show.

Gibbs is known for his unbreakable interrogations, but now fans will get to see his very first one. Will it go smoothly, or does the young team member still have some learning to do?

“One thing we haven’t shown yet, that I’m really excited for, is Gibbs’ first interrogation,” said showrunner Gina Lucita Monreal. “We’ve seen him question people, outside in the field and in the elevator, but we haven’t seen him yet in interrogation properly grilling somebody — and I’m excited to see what that first will look like.”

Season 2 will show young Gibbs shifting away from his newbie role as he gets used to the demands of an NCIS agent.

Several NCIS spinoffs have been short-lived, and ScreenRant points out that ORIGINS will have to maintain some of its key characteristics if it wants to thrive. It will need to keep its 1990s setting and not tread too close to the main show, for example.

Season 2 will also focus on how Gibbs gets on after the deaths of his wife and daughter and how it motivates him. It will explore his relationship with Mike Franks, whom he admires but questions.

Gibbs’ flirty relationship with his colleague Lala Dominguez will also develop more.

“The relationship between Gibbs and Lala is a unique and impactful one, and it’s one that we definitely want to highlight and see through to the end,” Monreal said earlier this year.

But in the Season 1 finale, Lala gets in a serious car accident, and her fate is unknown.

When asked about whether Lala will make it, Monreal said, “We will neither confirm nor deny.”

She continued, “In the past, the franchise hasn’t been scared of taking risks with characters and storylines. I also had my share of questions when I read it and when I did it, but all I can say is that you have to tune in to Season 2 to see what happens.”

Austin Stowell, who plays young Gibbs, is excited about the second season.

“To know that we’re coming back to do it again before we’re even done with the first one, I know what a luxury that is,” he said in April. “I’m feeling very blessed right now…Best job of my life.”

“I dream about the show, almost every night,” Stowell said last year. “He’s given me the greatest gift that I could ask for…This is the Gibbs who’s making mistakes, who’s living with ghosts and trying to put his life back together. And that’s a lot of fun for me to play.”

Season 2 will air on Oct. 14, on the anniversary of the first season’s premiere date.
