Netflix Expands Parental Control Features to Protect Children

In a new update, Netflix added a series of tools that parents can use to help monitor the type of content their children watch.

The tool allows parents to filter what titles their kids see while on the service, even allowing the parent to remove content entirely, reports The Verge.

The new feature is available on the general section, as well as the kids’ section of Netflix.

Being able to remove a series or movie entirely from the options of available content is the biggest update. Netflix also added a feature where parents can filter options by ratings. This tool can allow parents to set only G-rated titles to appear for their children.

According to The Verge, other new features include, “adding PINs to protect profiles, the ability to review a child’s viewing history, and disabling autoplay on TV shows in kids’ profiles if parents want to restrict screen time.”

Michelle Parsons, Netflix’s kid content manager, wrote in a post, “Choice and control have always been important for our members, especially parents. We hope that these additional controls will help parents make the right choices for their families.”

In 2019, Netflix’s animation chief, Melissa Cobb, told The New York Times that “roughly 60 percent of Netflix’s entire subscriber base watches family- and children-specific content.”

Netflix provides lots of children’s entertainment options and has recently invested to develop more family-friendly shows and licensing series from providers like Nickelodeon.

With families stuck at home, now more than ever it is so important that parents take advantage of these new features to monitor the content their children are watching.
