Some exciting new animated projects will be unveiled at the 2026 Annecy Animation Festival this June.

One of them, a movie called BATMAN: KNIGHTFALL PART 1: KNIGHTFALL, is “the first installment of a multi-part animated event bringing to life one of the most iconic and beloved runs in the rich history of Batman comics,” Variety reported last week.

The movie is an adaptation of the ‘90s comic books’ storyline, which introduces bad guy Bane. The movie is the first part of the story, Comic Book Movie reported. The comic books have three parts, Knightfall, Knightquest and KnightsEnd.

The official synopsis for the movie reads: “When the mysterious behemoth known only as Bane frees Batman’s entire Rogue’s Gallery from Arkham Asylum, the Caped Crusader is pushed to his mental and physical breaking point.”

The movie is directed by Jeff Wamester and written by Jeremy Adams. Wamester directed several animated DC movies in the Tomorrowverse franchise, including JUSTICE LEAGUE: CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS trilogy. Adams is a long-time DC Comics writer who wrote The Flash and Green Lantern books, Screen Rant reported.

Daffy Duck will also take the spotlight at Annecy in a new six-minute Looney Tunes short, DAFFY SEASON. In the short, Daffy and his frenemy Elmer Fudd play a game of soccer. Daffy’s 90th birthday is next year.

Annecy will also exclusively unveil two episode of a new anime series GHOST IN THE SHELL, based on Masamune Shirow’s manga.

There will be a behind-the-scenes event with the show’s creators, too. The director, Mokochan, and producers Kôhei Sakita, Kengo Abe and Daichi Sasa will guide the audience through project and use of CG technology.

“The world’s most famous cyberpunk franchise will be at Annecy,” said Annecy Artistic Director Marcel Jean.

The manga originally hit shelves in 1989. It tells the story of Motoko Kusanagi, a female cyborg who begins leading the crime-prevention unit “Shell Squad” at the request of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

There will also be a special project, LYSISTRATA, which marks the posthumous Annecy return of three-time Academy Award winner Richard Williams, who passed away in 2019 after six decades in the animation industry.

“The eminent Richard Williams is inextricably linked to Annecy’s history, and we are incredibly honoured to present this final work to our festivalgoers, as it once again demonstrates the exceptional talent of its creator,” stated Jean.

Williams, who directed WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT, created LYSISTRATA, a six-minute short, as a sequel to PROLOGUE.

Annecy takes place from June 21-27.
