New DeVon Franklin Movie to Retell This Bible Story
By Movieguide® Contributor
MIRACLES FROM HEAVEN producer DeVon Franklin has a new movie coming to Netflix — R&B, the Biblical story of Ruth and Boaz, but with a modern twist.
R&B takes place in Tennessee, where a young woman gives up the music scene to take care of a widowed elderly woman, eventually finding comfort in a new romance and a mother-daughter relationship with the woman.
The movie stars Phylicia Rashad, Serayah McNeill, Tyler Leply, Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, Jermaine Dupri, Yung Joc and hip-hop artist Lecrae. Franklin and Tyler Perry produce.
“Tyler and I have been great friends for over 15 years,” Franklin said. “So when he called me to team up on movies that can uplift the human spirit, I jumped at the chance, and we couldn’t have a better partner than Netflix to help us inspire the world.”
“I’m so excited to be working with DeVon on this and future projects. I think in this polarizing world, and at a time when the world seems to be growing colder every day, we both share the common goal of wanting to spread some good. And there’s no better place than Netflix.” Perry said.

Production began in October, and Netflix hasn’t hinted the release date just yet. R&B is one of several faith-based titles to come from Franklin and Perry, as they have signed a multi-year, multi-picture first-look deal with Netflix.
“Tyler and DeVon have created some of the most inspiring movies in the faith-based space, so they are perfect partners to help us bring even more of these stories to our members,” said Netflix VP of film Niija Kuykendall.
Franklin has worked on several Teddy Bear Award® winning movies, including THE STAR, BREAKTHROUGH and MIRACLES FROM HEAVEN. He’s currently working on a rom-com for Amazon Studios with a script written by Tynan and Elliot. It’s based on pastor Micheal Todd’s bestseller, “Relationship Goals: How to Win at Dating, Marriage and Sex.”
