NFL Linebacker Demario Davis Describes the Moment He Found God

By Movieguide® Contributor

New Orleans Saints linebacker recently opened up about the moment he started following God and the change his faith made in his life.

“All of a sudden, I [was] in worship, and all the words just start making sense,” Davis said, “I [was] able to just see, like the scales [were] falling from my eyes.”

“I [was] able to understand why Jesus had to come and die because there was no way for me to make the connection back to God. He washed me clean, and He was the bridge that allowed me to walk back into a relationship with my heavenly Father,” he explained in a video for Sports Spectrum.

Davis’ story is a testament to the power of worship and the way that God uses music to speak to his people.

Davis continued, explaining an immediate desire to grow in his relationship with Christ while also being vocal about his faith.

“I had this immense fire to go and tell people about this relationship that existed with Jesus that I hadn’t known before; I just wanted to know more about this guy… that I hadn’t created a relationship with. But now I wanted to grow in relationship with,” Davis shared.

“Ever since then, I’ve just been on fire for the kingdom of God, and I’ve grown in that relationship, and I’ve been able to share that with thousands of people, and it’s just been amazing,” he said.

Since then, Davis has used his platform to share the gospel with many people, and his faith has steadied him and given him hope during challenging times.

For the New Orleans Saints linebacker Demario Davis, the early parts of his career were marked by losing teams.

In 2014, Davis went 4-12 with the New York Jets. In 2016, Davis and the Cleveland Browns only managed one win all season, finishing 1-15.

Even after Davis moved the Saints, the 2021 season had glimpses of his previous losing teams when they went on a 5-game losing streak.

However, Davis—outspoken about his Christian faith—turned to prayer amid adversity on the field.

“I remember asking God, ‘Why am I going through this again?’ Because at least in my relationship with God, if I feel like I’m going through the same thing, there’s something I didn’t learn the first time,” he said on an episode of the Sports Spectrum podcast. “So was there something I didn’t learn in my year in Cleveland or something I didn’t learn in my years in New York?”

Davis said that the popular Serenity Prayer helped him learn a new lesson. The prayer partially reads: “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can and wisdom to know the difference.”

Now, with ten years of experience, and individual success, in the NFL, Davis continues to champion Christ, whether his team wins or loses.

Davis’ faith would be tested in a much more personal way following his baby daughter’s cancer diagnosis.

NFL linebacker Demario Davis and his wife, Tamela, recently opened up about their daughter Carly-Faith’s battle with cancer.

“When I really heard the doctors tell us that it was cancer and what our journey was going to look like, from that moment on there was just this weakening and it went from the top of head to the bottom of my feet and almost as if I was going to pass out,” Tamela Davis told CBN News.

Davis first noticed something was wrong with his daughter’s left eye in May 2020. Doctors discovered that it was retinoblastoma, a rare cancer of the eye.

“We got the same shocking news that many people get and we had the same emotions that many people have – anger, confusion, sadness,” Demario explained.

Doctors concluded that surgery, and removal of Carly-Faith’s left eye, was the way forward.

“I’m a person who typically don’t handle things very well especially when it comes to our children,” Tamela said. “I was trusting and relying on God a hundred percent and He just really comforted me and gave me peace to really be able to embrace what was happening.”

Demario added that they leaned on scripture to sustain their family.

“It’s a lot like the man who built his house on the rock versus building his house on the sand. When the storms come, the man that built his house on the rock, the house stood,” he explained. “But the one that built his house on sand, it collapsed. And that storm is reflective of the trials that will come in life. It’s not IF trials are going to come, it’s WHEN trials are going to come, and so it’s important to build a foundation and build it on rock. And I believe you build that in the Word and through a relationship with God.”

Through it all, Davis has remained faithful to God and continued to praise Him in both trial and triumph.
