Nika King Felt God ‘In the Room’ While Working on SOUND OF HOPE

Actress Nika King is sharing the personal connection that drew her to SOUND OF HOPE: THE STORY OF POSSUM TROT.

“I’m so glad I’m able to just be a part of a faith-based film and also have that real connection with God,” King told Faithwire. “Because it only makes the project more powerful, and it makes my purpose more cemented in what God has called me to do.”

The actress shared that, after the murder of her maternal grandmother, her mom was put into foster care, along with her three brothers. The four of them were later adopted by a pastor and his wife.

“It kind of unfolded just like this movie…the ups and downs of being traumatized, being left alone, kind of to fend for yourself,” King said. “As an actor, you’re always looking for projects that, for me, tell a story, amplify light. So, I was immediately drawn to the script.”

She also spoke about encountering the Holy Spirit on the set of the project.

“It was so captivating because there were times and scenes where the Spirit was…in the room, and they would yell, ‘Cut!’ and I’m like, ‘You can’t cut on this!’” she shared. “This is the spirit of God moving, not only in our performances, in our words, and in our thoughts, and in the messaging, because this film is meant to really fix this problem that we have in this country, with 400,000 kids being in foster care.”

King continued, “This is a God movement.”

In an interview with Belief Net, the actress said, “Let me tell you, [First Lady Donna Martin] has given me new life and new purpose. She probably don’t know what she’s doing in my life and what God is just doing my life through just portraying her. This is definitely having me on a whole different trajectory of what I thought my life would be like.”

The Movieguide® review for SOUND OF HOPE reads:

SOUND OF HOPE: THE STORY OF POSSUM TROT tells a heartwarming story. Donna Martin is grieving after her mother’s unexpected death. However, when God tells her to take in a foster child, she finds new purpose. Her husband is the town pastor and also feels called to take in children. So, he starts preaching about taking in the most in need. The entire town decides to take in foster children. Donna decides to take a very troubled teenage girl named Terri. The family wonders if they’ll be able to show Terri God’s love while maintaining their family.

SOUND OF HOPE: THE STORY OF POSSUM TROT is a beautiful story about an entire town taking in foster children. As such, it has a strong Christian, morally uplifting worldview. However, the movie does deal with some of the realities and hardships foster families and foster children undergo. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for children and families. However, SOUND OF HOPE: THE STORY OF POSSUM TROT shows that God’s love is real and that, no matter what your past is, God will always be with you.
