Christian rapper Nobigdyl wants to “lead [people] to the truth” through his faith-filled music.

“People assume something can’t be Christian if it’s good,” he explained to Relevant Magazine. “They hear melody, rhythm, visuals and think, ‘This can’t be church music.’ Then by the third or fourth listen, they actually hear what I’m saying.”

Nobigdyl shared that people want more meaning in their music, saying, “People are exhausted by vapid, surface-level lyrics. They’re looking for depth, even if they don’t call it that.”

The rapper even spotlights other Christian artists through his music festival, Holy Smoke, giving a stage to undiscovered artists.

“We wanted to highlight the next generation,” Nobigdyl said. “To give them a platform with full production, lights, sold-out crowds. We want to show that this can be done at the highest level….at a lot of festivals, it’s just pyro and backing tracks,” he says. “At Holy Smoke, everybody brings their A game. It’s about the craft.”

For Nobigdyl, his music is a way to connect with other Christians, as well as bring people closer to God.

“People might not even realize what they’re looking for,” he concluded. “They just know they’re tired. Then they hear something real, and it hits different. If that leads them to truth — even if it starts with a song — that’s worth it.”

In an interview with Christianity Today, Nobigdyl explained that his work as an artist reflects his belief that “God is the greatest creator.”

“I believe that He used art, conversation, and people to reach me in his kindness and love and mercy. He’s doing that for the world,” he said. “So whatever I’m doing creatively, I want it to reflect His excellence and the gift that He has given me. My job is to say yes to Him and honor Him in that, and platform and virality may come with that.”

He also reflected on Christian hip-hop as a genre, saying it has an “independent spirit” as many of the artists “are not signed to major labels.”

“Christian hip-hop has this unique tradition and history,” the rapper explained. “We’ve shown that we’re gonna say what’s beautiful and true, regardless of the consequences.”

Nobigdyl also has some exciting personal news — he and wife Chelsea welcomed their first child, a son named Canaan, in October!

“i understand it now,” the rapper captioned a carousel of photos from the hospital as the couple took their son home.

Nobigdyl’s work as a Christian artist is all about connecting with others, whether he’s singing for Christian fans, bringing nonbelievers closer to Christ or giving up-and-coming Christian artists a spotlight.
