Parents Sue Mattel After Doll Packaging Sends Kids to Porn Site

After selling millions of dolls whose packaging accidentally promoted a pornographic website, Mattel is now facing a class action lawsuit for providing no compensation for those affected by the mistake.
Prior to the opening of WICKED, Mattel launched a line of dolls that featured characters from the movie. The packaging included a website domain meant to bring people to the movie’s official page — WickedMovie.com — however a major typo meant any person following the packaging was instead brought to an adult website.

Though Mattel pulled the merchandise once it was made aware of the issue and sent out a warning through all major retailers who sold the product, many parents believe the company has not done enough to reconcile its mistake.
A South Carolina mom has now launched a class-action lawsuit against the company to cover the damages her daughter faced after accessing the pornographic website.
“These scenes were hardcore, full-on nude pornographic images depicting actual intercourse. Plaintiff’s minor daughter immediately showed her mother the photographs and both were horrified by what they saw. If plaintiff had been aware of such an inappropriate defect in the product, she would not have purchased it,” the lawsuit says, noting that Mattel did not offer any refund or other compensation for those who purchased the dolls with the misprinted packaging.
Though Mattel has yet to comment on the lawsuit, the company previously stated that the mistake had no impact on the functionality of the dolls as once the packaging is discarded, the damage of the typo is nullified.
The previous misprint on the packaging in no way impacts the value or play experience provided by the product itself in the limited number of units sold before the correction,” Mattel said, per Variety.
