PJ MASKS Season 1 Celebrates Doing the Right Thing

By Movieguide® Contributor

PJ MASKS Season 1 follows the adventures of three savvy kids who turn into superheroes at sundown. With an owl’s flight and vision, cat speed and agility and lizard grip and camouflage, the trio always right wrongs after local villains turn things upside down.

The show streams on Netflix and Disney+. It features voices from Addison Holley, star of Prime’s ANNEDROIDS, and Kyle Breitkopf from Prime’s SIGMUND AND THE SEA MONSTERS.

Every night, Amaya, Connor and Greg turn into “Owlette,” “Catboy” and “Gekko” once they put on their superhero outfits. After saying their slogan, “PJ Masks, we’re on our way into the night to save the day!” they’re off to return stolen toys and playground equipment or right whatever wrong that their villainous peers have done.

The PJ Masks’ nemeses are an egotistical genius named Romeo, the moon-obsessed Luna Girl and the naughty Night Ninja. Each of these villains acts like playground bullies—they’re only concerned with their own interests and are mean-spirited. The PJ Masks learn to handle them with grace and good judgment.

Aside from having magical superpowers, the PJ MASKS display a very wholesome, moral and Biblical worldview. The heroes learn important lessons in each episode. These lessons teach them to:

  • Share
  • Be themselves instead of someone else
  • Face their fears
  • Work together instead of rushing ahead
  • Make things right with one another when they’ve done something wrong
  • Focus on the task at hand (what’s important) instead of getting revenge on someone who hurt them
  • Listen to each other
  • Control their anger
  • Graciousness
  • Be considerate of friends’ wishes
  • Help those in need
  • Be honest
  • Be inclusive
  • Listen to others instead of trying to be in control
  • Be responsible
  • Help the bad guys do the right thing

The show discourages taking advantage of friends, selfishness, blaming, showing off, boasting, dependence on technology and overly competitive attitudes. Adults are rarely shown through the show, but the heroes learn to solve problems on their own and prove that they don’t need an adult’s assistance to set them on the right path. The bottom line that this series enforces is that being a hero means doing the right thing.

There is very little concerning content—just some name-calling and very mild violence. Characters often have things thrown at them, or a hero gets grabbed by a robot arm. The villains talk down to the heroes and call them names like “PJ Pests” and “Geeky Gekko.”

The quality of the show would have been a little better if there were fewer repetitive themes. The same things often get stolen by the same three villains. There is also a lack of variety in the scenes and settings, but these aspects will likely be lost on young viewers. On the other hand, there is a lot of variety when it comes to displaying moral values. The production crew takes it seriously, and that’s really where the show stands out.

PJ MASKS Season 1 has a Biblical worldview with some minor questionable elements. It displays loads of good values and goes beyond the typical set of morals displayed in standard children’s media.
