Netflix’s finally kicked off production in Canada for its LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE series.
According to Deadline, the show is based on Laura Ingalls Wilder’s classic books.
Alice Halsey will play Laura, “the bright, honest, authority-questioning young heroine of our story.”
“Part hopeful family drama, part epic survival tale, and part origin story of the American West, this fresh adaptation of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s iconic semi-autobiographical Little House books offers a kaleidoscopic view of the struggles and triumphs of those who shaped the frontier,” a synopsis of the show reads.
“I am absolutely thrilled with the brilliant cast we have assembled,” showrunner and executive producer Rebecca Sonnenshine said in the press release. “Each one of them brings something special to the Little House universe and will help make this story come alive for a whole new generation.”
Halsey announced the news of her new role on Instagram last month, writing, “I love all of the Little House books so much, and I’m so excited and grateful to get to bring Laura to life! Thank you so much to the LITTLE HOUSE creative team for putting your faith in me.”
Other cast members include Luke Bracey (HACKSAW RIDGE), who will play “Laura’s ruggedly handsome, charming, and outgoing father, Charles Ingalls.”

Crosby Fitzgerald (PALM ROYALE) will portray “Laura’s mother, Caroline Ingalls. Caroline did not marry her husband out of convenience — they fell truly, madly, deeply in love. It was a great romance — and it still is.”
Skywalker Hughes will play Laura’s older sister, Mary Ingalls. Other cast members include Jocko Sims, Warren Christie, Meegwun Fairbrother, Alyssa Wapanatǎhk, Wren Zhawenim Gotts and Xander Cole.
Sonnenshine can’t wait for fans to see the new adaptation of the beloved books.
“I fell deeply in love with these books when I was 5 years old,” she revealed. “They inspired me to become a writer and a filmmaker, and I am honored and thrilled to be adapting these stories for a new audience.”
Jinny Howe, vice president, Drama Series, Netflix, also spoke on the series, saying, “LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE has captured the hearts and imaginations of so many fans around the world, and we’re excited to share its enduring themes of hope and optimism with a fresh take on this iconic story. Rebecca’s vision threads the needle with an emotional depth that will delight both new and existing fans of this beloved classic.”
LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE has begun filming in Canada; however, no official release date has been announced. Stay tuned for more information as the series continues production.
