What happens when you mix the Old Testament with the dry, mock-umentary comedy from a show like THE OFFICE? You get THE PROMISED LAND, a Bible-based series that brings together humor and meaningful messages.
“I’m the showrunner of the TV show THE PROMISED LAND, which a biblical comedy series — Moses but told in the story and in the air, in the style of THE OFFICE and PARKS AND RECREATION,” director Mitch Hudson told Fox News Digital. “It’s like a pseudo-documentary with interviews of Moses and his family as they’re on their journey to the Promised Land. And to me, that felt like it was necessary because of the story that we’re telling.”
Hudson added that he felt it would be a “disservice if it was only funny” and makes a point to combine humor with biblical history in a tasteful way.
He also hopes to humanize and embraced the hard moments that the characters face.

“They’re hurting. We will hurt with them, you know. And then when they laugh there, we’re gonna laugh too,” he said. “I want it to be a very kind of holistic experience of story of Moses and Israelites and their journey…We’re always going to have those moments where the jokes kind of peter off for a little bit and we feel what was really happening for them.”
Although this is a comedy, Hudson still wants to honor God.
“I want to make sure that we keep it sacred. You know, for me, our line in the show, in terms of comedy, is that jokes about people are fair game You know, people are people who have always been people,” he said. “And people are naturally going to fail, going to make mistakes. People are people are funny, and we’re the same as we’ve always been.”
He added, “The heart of the show is very much nestled in this idea that these were real people with a sincere faith and the true God that was leading them.”
God certainly isn’t opposed to laughter and joy — He created them, and Nehemiah 8:10 tells us, “The joy of the Lord is your strength.”
Movieguide®’s review of Season 1 of THE PROMISED LAND reads, “The first three episodes of THE PROMISED LAND are fairly funny. They’re filmed like THE OFFICE TV series. They have high production values, including location scouting, cinematography, costume design, and a good use of the mockumentary style. The series has a strong biblical, moral worldview with positive references to God.”
Movieguide® notes, “The first three episodes of THE PROMISED LAND avoid blasphemy and parody. However, there’s a mention of men laying with their wives, women’s ‘time of bleeding’ and some name calling. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for younger children.”
Season 1 is available to stream on YouTube.
