Country legend Randy Travis’ wife Mary recalled how she fought for her husband’s recovery from his stroke even after receiving medical advice to say goodbye.
“I think Randy, there was never a doubt in Randy’s mind that he could make it through it,” Mary told Fox News. “It was a magical moment when I went to his bedside when they said, ‘We need to pull the plug. He’s got too many things going against him at this point.’”
“That’s when I went to him. That was the moment that I knew that Randy Travis was gonna make it because he squeezed my hand and a tear went down his face,” she continued. “And I said, ‘He’s still fighting.’”

Miraculously, this trust in her husband paid off, as Travis recovered and has even returned to performing since his debilitating stroke in 2013. At the time, not only was he facing a devastating stroke, but he had also contracted a staph infection and three hospital-born viruses including Serratia and Pseudomonas.
Though Travis has had great difficulty singing and even speaking since the stroke occurred, he has recently found new life through the use of AI which has been trained to mimic his voice. He even released a new song in 2024 using the technology.
“It’s given Randy back the ability to make music, to do the things that he loved to do more than anything in the world. And if people could just imagine if their greatest passion was taken from them, what would you hope for? So, our hope and our prayer for 11 years was ‘Please let us make music again,’” Mary said.
“We like to call it ‘artistic intelligence’ because to watch [Randy] and [producer] Kyle work together to make this song out of 42 song stems of his, with James Dupree laying down the [vocals], it was amazing to watch,” she added.
Travis has since released other songs as well, including “Horses in Heaven,” a song that points to God in the face of tragedy.
“Tomorrow’s song release, ‘Horses In Heaven,’ feels like a timely reminder of God’s love and mercy, and I hope it brings some comfort to those of us hurting through these tragedies,” Travis said when the song was released. “We have decided to continue with this release and promotion of it, but felt remiss to not share what’s on my heart right now…God Bless Ben, the victims of last night’s crash, and all who are feeling the heaviness of this moment.”
Praise the Lord for Mary’s incredible faith and confidence that her husband could still recover even when the doctors thought his situation was hopeless.
