Sean Murray Talks Michael Weatherly’s Return to NCIS Universe

By Movieguide® Contributor

Sean Murray discussed the joy of having Michael Weatherly return for an NCIS episode that paid tribute to David McCallum and teased the possibility of his character, McGee, appearing on the newly announced DiNozzo and Ziva spinoff.

“Michael is a lifelong friend. I talk to him all the time…” Murray told TVinsider. “Just knowing that this was going to happen was really cool. And we had talked about just, it’s wild because he hadn’t been here in 10 years, and as soon as he stepped on stage as Tony doing his thing, it was like it warped me right back to the old Tony-McGee stuff. It just reminded me how much fun it was.”

The episode honored the late McCallum, who played Donald “Ducky” Mallard, after his death at 90 years old last September.

“It was a hard episode to get through, just having worked with David for 20 years, and it was kind of a mixture of saying goodbye in real life and saying goodbye on camera. It was a tough thing,” Murray said.

“I hope we paid a good tribute to the Ducky character, and I know David would’ve been so happy with it,” he continued. “During the episode, we got to see a lot of great scenes that David did, and I think it was good.”

With the newly announced NCIS spinoff series featuring DiNozzo and Ziva, fans have surely been wondering if any other NCIS characters will appear on the show. While Murray didn’t confirm anything, he did admit that McGee’s appearance is not out of the question.

“It’s very possible, I’ll say that,” Murray said. “Especially inside of our franchise, as I’m sure you could guess. And yeah, we like to have fun with some of that stuff, and it’s all in the family, so we’ll see what happens.”

Paramount+ has given NCIS fans much to be excited about as the platform recently ordered a new NCIS spinoff starring Michael Weatherly – Tony DiNozzo – and Cote de Pablo – Ziva David.

“We’ve been talking about this story for many years, and now, with John McNamara at the helm, we are ready,” Weatherly and de Pablo said in a joint statement about the show. “The world of Tony and Ziva (and daughter Tali) promises to be an action-packed roller coaster fueled by love, danger, tears and laughter.”

“We also wanted to acknowledge and thank the fans from around the world who supported the ‘TIVA’ movement for years,” the statement continued. “To this day, they say hello in grocery stores and on the street to tell us how much these characters mean to them and ask what Tony and Ziva are up to now.”
