SIGHT Doctor Finds Purpose in Christ, Not Science
By Movieguide® Contributor
Dr. Ming Wang, the real-life inspiration behind Angel Studios’ SIGHT, is sharing the connection between his faith and his work as a doctor.
“I was an atheist before I came to America, as most Chinese are still today in China. I believed only in science because I fought so hard to have freedom, to have the opportunity to study science. And I was not interested in having anything else distract me,” he said during an episode of the “Jesus Calling” podcast.
That all changed after a conversation with a professor at Harvard, where he was attending medical school. In an effort to answer Wang’s questions about the complicated structure of the eye, the professor pointed out that everything created is similarly complicated.
“He opened the window in my life, making me realize that the reason the human eye is so complicated, but can form nearly flawlessly most of the time, was because it did not form out of randomness as atheists believe,” he explained. “The eyes form with a purpose, with a design, and the purpose is for vision. So I realize that there’s a Creator behind it all.”
Wang continued, “After I became a Christian, my life has fundamentally changed, because I realize that science is still important, necessary, but not sufficient. I realize there’s science giving me the tools. But a faith in Christ gives me a purpose for what I’m going to use the tools for.”
After finishing medical school, Wang prayed, asking God what He wanted him to do with his skills.
“It was in my prayer that I felt God was giving me an answer, to use my long, hard-earned medical skill to help those who need the most help,” he said. “So I became committed. My lifelong mission is to help regular people to improve their eyesight using laser vision corrections.”
Wang continued, “I felt that as a Christian, the biggest difference is God gives us a Christ-centric purpose. God wants us to do something beyond what we normally do for Him to glorify Him. Then that fulfills a purpose that He has given to each of us. The courage and determination of these kids have also helped me, their eye doctor, to come from my own darkness to light, spiritually.”
Wang’s story was told in SIGHT, a movie from Angel Studios that “follows the inspiring true story of Ming Wang, an impoverished Chinese prodigy who flees Communist China to become a pioneering eye surgeon in America,” per the movie’s website. “When tasked with restoring the sight of an orphan who was blinded by her step mother, he must confront the trauma of living through the violent uprising in his youth, the Cultural Revolution.”
Wang called the movie “a humbling experience,” saying it was “surreal” to see his story brought to life on the big screen.
A portion of the Movieguide® review reads:
SIGHT is an inspiring true story with a strong Christian worldview. The movie extols faith, family life, prayer, hard work, and dedication to help others. The main character confronts the tragedy of his past, to better serve others in the present. Many flashbacks create some confusion and sometimes slow down the story’s momentum. Despite this, great writing, a remarkable story, strong acting, and likable characters make this movie a winner. There are some scary moments, however, including child-abuse, terrorism and beating. SIGHT also has adult thematic elements, a few light profanities, and a significant amount of whiskey drinking to help Dr. Wang forget his past. MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older children.
