Pittsburgh Steelers Chaplain Kent Chevalier Wants to ‘Represent Jesus’ in NFL

By Movieguide® Contributor

Pittsburgh Steelers team chaplain Kent Chevalier shared his main goal for his work in the NFL while on the “Sports Spectrum” podcast.

“One of the goals that I have is that I hope that I can represent Jesus in that Steelers context,” Chevalier said. “As a guest in that building and that, when people interact with Erica and me, that they would say something along this line…because of the presence of Jesus that we bring into that place.”

“Something along the lines of, ‘Well, if that’s what God’s like, then okay. Let me lean in a little bit,'” he continued. “And it’s not so that Erica and I get liked. It’s not about that. It’s so that we can enhance the reputation of Jesus in the eyes of everybody we interact with because I want people to know the real Jesus. Not some version that has been portrayed and twisted. How our culture represents that.”

“You know, just recently, this whole idea of how sometimes we can fight in the Christian subculture and that people want nothing to do with us as a result,” Chevalier added. “And so I think our jobs in the NFL is I just want to represent Jesus and get people to really interact with the Jesus of the Bible.”

Chevalier often uses his social media as a platform to represent the Jesus he is talking about.

In a recent post, he wrote, “Success is not a salary. Success is not a corner office. Success is not the big house. Success is not a franchise. Success is not followers. It can include these things, BUT…Success is obedience to what God has called you to do. Success is doing it God’s way. Success is caring for your team before yourself. Success is integrity when no one is looking. Success is sacrificial generosity. Success is kindness. Success is contentment. To name a few…”

He often encourages his players and other athletes to “deflect the glory” to God.

The chaplain wrote, “Deflect the Glory! When millions are chanting your name, it’s very important to deflect the glory given to you back to God where it belongs. People aren’t built to receive that kind of attention and adoration…deflect the glory. Win or lose…deflect the glory. It keeps you humble and steadies your heart.”

With their new addition of quarterback Russell Wilson, the Steelers are hopeful that the 2024 season will be a turnaround for them and that they will be back in title contention.

Movieguide® reported:

Quarterback Russell Wilson was released from the Denver Broncos earlier this month but has now landed a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

“Ready to Work!!!” Wilson captioned a series of Instagram photos, including a picture with Patrick McQueen, who was also traded to the Steelers.
