SUPERMAN Star’s Wife Saved His Life With These 7 Words

SUPERMAN star Christopher Reeve’s wife Dana showed him unconditional love in the midst of the most tragic event of his life.

The recent trailer for the upcoming documentary SUPER/MAN: THE CHRISTOPHER REEVE STORY revealed the special moment.

While in the hospital paralyzed after a horse-riding accident, Reeve wanted to give up his fight for his life.

“I ruined my life and everybody else’s. I won’t be able to ski, sail, throw a ball to Will. Won’t be able to make love to Dana. Maybe we should let me go,” Reeve says in the trailer. Then he recounted the moment his wife restored his hope.

“And then she said the words that saved my life: ‘You’re still you. And I love you,’” he reflected.

Dana stood by her husband’s side and together the two created The Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation. Its mission states, “We are dedicated to curing spinal cord injury by advancing innovative research and improving the quality of life for individuals and families impacted by paralysis.”

Reeve lived for 10 years after his accident until he died on Oct. 10, 2004. Shortly after that, Dana succumbed to her own health battle.

“Within months of Christopher’s death in 2004, Dana endured two more heartbreaking events: She lost her mother, and she was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer,” Distractify reported. “Though Dana said she never smoked, folks speculated that her time singing in smoky bars may have contributed to why she got sick. Ultimately, Dana died from the lung cancer on March 6, 2006.”

The Reeves’ dedication to curing spinal cord injury and improving the quality of life for individuals, caregivers and families impacted by paralysis continues through their foundation today.

Will Reeve, Dana and Christopher’s son, shared an Instagram post, honoring his parents and promoting the upcoming movie.

“The man you knew, the story you didn’t. SUPER/MAN: THE CHRISTOPHER REEVE STORY – Only in Theaters September 21 and September 25,” the post began. “Tickets Now Available #ChristopherReeveStory.”

Movieguide® previously reported on the documentary:

The late SUPERMAN actor Christopher Reeve’s story will live on in a new film about his life.

The trailer for the documentary SUPER/MAN: THE CHRISTOPHER REEVES STORY released Monday.

In it, Reeve, who died in 2004, said, “My answer was that a hero is someone who commits a courageous action without considering the consequences. Now, my definition is completely different. I think a hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.”

Reeve became a quadriplegic after a horse-riding accident in 1995, which proved detrimental to his quality of life and his career. Despite the tragedy, he defied the odds and pressed on amid his disability.

The Hollywood Reporter said, “Despite becoming a quadriplegic, the doc reveals Reeve overcoming earlier doubts about continuing to live and, lifted by the strength of family and friends behind him, devote his life to discovering a cure for spinal cord injuries and advocating for disability rights and care.”
