Donnie Wahlberg and his BOSTON BLUE co-star Sonequa Martin-Green shared some teasers for their upcoming show, including that it will center around another strong family committed to police work.

“We are obviously standing on the shoulders of the Reagan family, the culture that was already established. And I love it because we’re going to get close with another family, the Silvers, which is also a prominent law enforcement family, and that’s where Lena Silvers is from,” Martin-Green, who plays Lena Silvers, said. “And it’s very similar to the Reagans. I mean, they couldn’t be more different, but they are also so similar…It’s crime. It’s doing the right thing. It’s sacrifice”

Silvers will serve as Danny Reagan’s partner as he leaves New York City to join the Boston police force. While they will have great chemistry on camera, Wahlberg and Martin-Green shared that they felt connected to each other right away in real life as well after meeting for the first time.

“Going into the process of trying to find Lena, my mindset was to find someone who you want to get to know more,” Wahlberg explained. “And strangely enough, when I first met [her], I felt like [she] was someone I’ve known my whole life… And it’s a wonderful feeling to know something with such confidence that she’s it.”

“We were immediately friends,” Martin-Green added. “And we both understood what we want[ed] to do here. And I was so moved by how Donnie lives with his heart out in the open. And it really encouraged me into this…The fact that you opened your heart to me and into this franchise was really beautiful.”

BOSTON BLUE was announced in February, a few months after BLUE BLOODS aired its final episode. Though many fans remain bitter about the ending of the original show, CBS hopes the spinoff can fill the void and win over old and new fans alike.

“In BOSTON BLUE, a universe expansion of the long-running top drama BLUE BLOODS, Wahlberg will reprise his role as NYPD officer Danny Reagan as he takes a position with Boston PD,” a logline for the show reads. “Once in Boston, he is paired with detective Lena Peters, the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family.”

The spinoff also leaves the door open for beloved BLUE BLOODS characters to return. Tom Selleck, who played Frank Reagan, made it clear he would love to return and reprise his role if possible.

“Tom’s been pretty vocal when it comes to his feelings about the network ending BLUE BLOODS,” an anonymous source told Closer Weekly. “He did not want to say goodbye to that role, so naturally he’s very open to coming back and doing cameos on Donnie’s show.”

BOSTON BLUE is set to premiere on CBS on Oct. 17 and stream the next day on Paramount+.
