Tim Allen Recalls Funny Mix-Ups While Filming LAST MAN STANDING

By Movieguide® Contributor

Tim Allen has played in a few TV families over the years, but when he starred in LAST MAN STANDING, he might have forgotten who his real family was.

Allen recently shared, “Nancy Travis once told me [something] after I called her during LAST MAN STANDING. I said, ‘Have you talked to the girls [who play our daughters] over the summer?’ Then there’s this long pause and she goes, ‘Tim, these aren’t our daughters and I’m not actually your wife.’”

This kind of thing happened more than once.

“She was so wonderful about it,” Allen explained, “because sometimes when they were having trouble on the show, I’d go, ‘How do you think they feel?’ And she would respond, ‘Tim, they’re actors. We just read [what is on the page but] she’s not really that sad.'”

Allen’s familial feelings may transfer to his new sitcom, SHIFTING GEARS. In the series, Matt, a car restorer, is in for a surprise when his estranged daughter, Riley, shows up with her kids. They navigate their rocky relationship as Matt tries to help Riley.

ABC announced the show’s debut broke a streaming record. The premier had nearly 17 million views across Hulu and Hulu on Disney+, making it the most-watched ABC series.

However, audiences aren’t wowed. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics have collectively given it a rank of 42% while the audience score sits higher at 67%.

Part of Movieguide®’s review of SHIFTING GEARS 1.1 reads:

SHIFTING GEARS is an entertaining family comedy on ABC starring Tim Allen as Matt and Kat Dennings as Riley…

The show teaches strong biblical values, emphasizing the importance of family, forgiveness, and reconciliation. Though Matt and Riley have hardly spoken since she left the house at 18, they still love each other and want the best for one another. Furthermore, they bond over the loss of their wife/mom and remember her as a remarkable woman who bridged the family. However, the show also features moderate foul language, including 5 instances of the Lord’s name being taken in vain, along with miscellaneous immorality sprinkled throughout, including a young girl talking about “tearing down the patriarchy” and Riley laughing about slashing someone’s tires for revenge. Thus. Movieguide® advises caution for older children and teens.
