Twitter Claims Misidentifying Muslim Boulder Shooter Does Not Violate Misinformation Policy

By Movieguide® Staff

The alleged perpetrator of the Boulder Colorado shooting was charged with ten counts of first-degree murder. Police revealed that the suspect was also an anti-Trump Muslim immigrant. Despite Twitter’s recent proclivity to shutdown misinformation, calling the shooter both white and even Christian did not violate the platform’s policy.

“The Tweets referenced are not in violation of the Twitter Rules,” a Twitter spokesperson said according to Newsweek. “We will not take action on every instance of misinformation. Currently, our misinformation rules cover COVID-19 misinformation, synthetic and manipulated media and civic integrity.”

Police identified Al Aliwi Alissa, a 21-year-old Syrian immigrant to the U.S., as the lead suspect in the mass shooting at the King Soopers supermarket in Colorado. One police officer was among the ten victims of the shooting.

According to The Federalist, Alissa’s connection to the Islamic State was not confirmed and is under investigation.

Many political commentators used the incident as a platform to address white supremacy. Some even claimed that a white Christian was to blame for the shooting before police reports named Alissa as the suspect, Newsweek reported.

Coming on the heels of the Atlanta spa shootings, the niece of Vice President Kamala Harris posted a now-deleted tweet just hours after the Boulder massacre.

“The Atlanta shooting was not even a week ago. Violent white men are the greatest terrorist threat to our country,” Meena Harris posted according to Daily Mail.

Alissa’s brother noted that his brother had a history of violent behavior and was paranoid about being constantly watched or followed.

“When he was having lunch with my sister in a restaurant, he said, ‘People are in the parking lot, they are looking for me.’ She went out, and there was no one. We didn’t know what was going on in his head,” Alissa’s brother told the Daily Beast.
