What’s Next for Tom Selleck? Star Talks Life After BLUE BLOODS

Tom Selleck shared where he hopes his career takes him now that his 14-year-long role on BLUE BLOODS as Commissioner Frank Reagan has come to a close.

“I don’t know where my next job will take me,” Selleck told Parade. “People ask, ‘What do you want to do next? I’m not sure. I don’t want to do Frank Reagan II.”

“A good Western’s always on my list,” he added. “I miss that; I want to sit on a horse again.”

While many associate Selleck with his roles in MAGNUM P.I. or BLUE BLOODS, the actor has a strong history with the Western genre as well, starring in six throughout his career. Most notable was QUIGLEY DOWN UNDER, an Australian Western which is still popular. His Jesse Stone-based movies also still resonate with Selleck’s fans today, a role the actor would love to reprise.

“It would be an interesting challenge because Jesse is older now,” Selleck said. “They’ve been quite a few years between shows. That doesn’t mean he isn’t a viable character. Everyone I go, one of the things I get asked is, ‘When can I see another JESSE STONE?’”

While Selleck enjoys the Western atmosphere, even living on an avocado ranch in California, he is not sold on that genre specifically. The actor is also interested in re-engaging with comedy, a style he has had limited, but successful, stints with in the past.

“I would love to do another comedy,” Selleck said. “The right kind of comedy. FRIENDS made people laugh and cry at times. That’s the kind of comedy I enjoy doing. THREE MEN AND A BABY had that, too.”

“A half-hour comedy is something I miss doing,” he added. “We always tried to find the humor in Frank Reagan, which [was] sometimes hard with him.”

While even Selleck doesn’t know what’s next in store for him, fans still have one more chance to enjoy one more new episode of BLUE BLOODS when the series finale airs on Dec. 13.

“It’s all hands on deck for the Reagan family, as they race to stop deadly mayhem in the city when the gangs of New York unite together to demand amnesty for the release of their imprisoned members and those awaiting trial,” a synopsis of the final episode, “End of Tour,” reads.

BLUE BLOODS showrunner Kevin Wade said of the final episode, “[Co-writer] Siobhan Byrne O’Connor and I decided early that the finale that would work best for our wonderful large cast were stories where all of them are in pursuit of [the same] syndicate.”

“So while each main character would have a separate alley to walk down, they were working toward finding the same criminal. That makes for the most propulsive way we can tell all four stories at once. And of course, the family dinner scene took a lot of attention just in terms of who would be there and why and would anything be promised or resolved,” he added.
