Actor Glen Powell chooses to live in his home state of Texas despite his Hollywood fame, telling Vanity Fair that he wanted to “sign-off” from Los Angeles.

“I needed a spiritual place where I could hang my hat and truly be unplugged,” the 38-year-old actor told the outlet of returning to Texas. He also wants to prioritize his family, saying, “My parents just turned 70, and you want to enjoy every moment you have near your family.”

“It’s really fun to be around people that love movies and love the business. However, sometimes that echo chamber can be not so great for you on the mental health level,” he said. “When all you do is consume movies and entertainment, you could become a little self-aware and maybe derivative of yourself. Your personal life, there’s no sort of freedom there. There’s storytelling around that, and I feel like that’s just not good for you on the long term.”

In fact, Powell hopes to bring more of the entertainment industry to Texas.

“If you live in LA…where everyone is sort of a part of this thing, you can’t ever sign off of that app. All of my friends know I’m starting to recruit all my favorite people down to Austin. There’s so much being shot around Texas now, and it’s about to get even more competitive,” he said.

Powell is also working on something that not many stars do: going back to college and earning a degree. Currently, he attends the University of Texas at Austin.

“I literally just paid my tuition two days ago for next semester,” he revealed.

Because he knows fame is fleeting, Powell prioritizes kindness and hard work.

“Anyone who believes that they’re going to be top dog forever has not studied how Hollywood works, so the best that you can do is really work as hard as you possibly can,” he said. “Make things that you believe in, treat people well, and hope that you leave the world with some classic things that they can continue watching for years to come.”

He added, “I hope I get to do this job until I die, which I hope is at an old age, fingers crossed. I love this job.”

Most recently, Powell starred in the sci-fi thriller THE RUNNING MAN which he shared about on Instagram.

“I am incredibly proud of this film, every wild moment on set, and every single cast and crew member who poured their heart and soul into bringing this story to life,” he wrote in the caption. “I am truly grateful for each of you. Wherever you are watching, I hope you feel the love that went into building this world. Finally, to our fearless leader, the genius filmmaker Edgar Wright, thank you for the honor of letting me be your Ben Richards. Run to the theaters like your life depends on it!”

Powell is also known for his roles in TOP GUN: MAVERICK, TWISTERS and HIT MAN.
