Why Harrison Ford Doesn’t Plan On Retiring: ‘I Love To Work’
By Movieguide® Contributor
Hollywood veteran Harrison Ford might be 80, but he has no plans to retire.
“I don’t do well when I don’t have work,” Ford told CNN [via Deadline]. “I love to work… I love to feel useful. It’s my Jones, I want to be helpful.”
So, what is it that the INDIANA JONES and STAR WARS star loves so much about acting?
“It is the people that you get to work with,” the actor explained. “The intensity and the intimacy of collaboration… it’s the combined ambition, somehow forged from words on a page. I don’t plan what I want to do in a scene and I don’t feel obliged to do anything but I am naturally affected by the things that I work on.”
Fans will continue to see Ford on screen, but after this summer, they’ll have to say goodbye to one of his most famous characters, Indiana Jones. The actor has made it clear that this year’s INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY will be his last time playing the beloved archaeologist.
“This is the final film in the series, and this is the last time I’ll play the character,” Ford told Total Film. “I anticipate that it will be the last time that he appears in a film.”
He elaborated on the enduring popularity of Indiana Jones to Sky News, saying, “There aren’t too many roles that anybody plays for so long.”
“I mean, it’s kind of silly, it’s 42 years we’ve been going on with this,” the actor laughed. “But the reason for that, I think, is because these are family films and they’re passed on from generation to generation of young people when their parents feel it’s the right time. And that’s exposed me, and this film, and these characters, to a new generation of [audiences] and that’s been a boon to my career.”
A portion of the Movieguide® review for INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY reads:
INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY is revisiting an old friend. It has the exciting, suspenseful action scenes and narrow escapes moviegoers expect from an Indiana Jones movie. DIAL OF DESTINY has a strong moral worldview, with some Christian, redemptive content, including three references to Jesus Christ’s crucifixion. Eventually, the hero discovers that love is worth all the knowledge in the world. However, there’s some foul language and scary moments involving murder, plane crashes, bugs, and a bevy of eels underwater. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older children.
