Why NCIS: HAWAII Star Keeps Her Kids Off Social Media

By Movieguide® Contributor

NCIS: HAWAII star Vanessa Lachey isn’t afraid to keep her three kids—sons Camden, 11, and Phoenix, 7, and daughter Brooklyn, 9—off social media.

In an interview with PEOPLE, the actress explained why.

“I actually signed a pact when I was on the mainland with the school that we wouldn’t let our kids have phones until they were in sixth grade,” she said. “I’ve since left that school, but I still believe in that.”

Since her oldest is only 11, Lachey doesn’t “think they need it at this point.”

“They go from our house to school, and look, everyone’s different. If you have a kid that needs it for communication, I get it. And I also do not judge,” she added.

“But also there’s just me being in Hawaii and really seeing life here and seeing them thrive without all of that,” she explained. “I mean, my son, shoes are optional at his school, and it’s because the kids are grounded. They go to school and their feet are in the grass and the classrooms, some of them are outside.”

When it comes to watching their parents on the big screen, Lachey and her husband, Nick, are a united front.

“No, they don’t watch our shows. They do watch NCIS: HAWAII because they know so much about [it]. And I actually come home, if I’m cut, I’ll come home with the wound so they can touch it,” she described. “They pulled off the scar so they can see, ‘This is fake, Mommy’s fake. This isn’t blood, this is fake. It’s a movie.'”

“So for that, I’m grateful that they can watch it, but I don’t think that they’ve ever seen anything else we’ve done,” she added.

Other celebrities are keeping their kids away from social media as well.

HGTV star Erin Napier said, “For us, it’s less about what we don’t want them to use and more about what we want them to do with the adolescence that they’re going to be given.”

Earlier this year, singer Kelly Clarkson said, “[Social media] can be really hard on kids in general but especially kids with parents in the public eye. So I have informed them they’re not allowed to, under my roof, ever have [it].”

Movieguide® previously reported on actress Eva Mendes’ social media policy for her kids:

Actress Eva Mendes just shared why she’s keeping her kids away from the internet.

“When my kids ask me if they’re old enough to go on the internet, social media or anything requiring wifi,” Mendes captioned a GIF of herself shaking her head disapprovingly…

The actress replied, “I’m just sharing what I feel now, but I know it’s gonna get harder as they get older. So, I hear ya, mama. I let my kids use the iPad to make movies and watch films I’ve downloaded, but I don’t have internet access on the iPad. Lotsa love your way, fellow mama!”
