Why NFL Star Russell Wilson Chose to Abstain From Sex Before Marriage

By Movieguide® Staff

Former Seahawks star Russell Wilson is candid about his Christian faith and also the role that faith has in every area of his life.

Wilson married Ciara in 2016, but he understood the importance of celibacy before the couple tied the knot.

In a 2015 interview with Us Magazine, Wilson clarified his reasoning behind his counter-cultural stance on love.

“I do have a girlfriend, yes, she’s a sweetheart,” he said. “She’s everything you could ever want, honestly. Funny thing is, I told somebody that that’s the girl I wanted to be with before I ever met her. I told somebody, ‘I’m probably going to end up with Ciara.'”

For Wilson, pleasing God became the guiding factor in their relationship.

“I met this girl named Ciara who was the most beautiful woman in the world, the most kind person, the most engaging person, everything that I could ever want,” he continued. “She was on tour and I was looking at her in the mirror, and she was sitting there. And God spoke to me and said ‘I need you to lead her.’ And I was like, ‘Really? Right now?’ And he goes, ‘No, I want you and need you to lead her.’ And I asked her, ‘What would you do if we took all that extra stuff off the table? And just did it Jesus’ way?’

“Yeah, we’re talking about sex… Can we love each other without that?” he added. “If you can really love someone without that then you can really love somebody… I ain’t gonna lie to y’all now. I need y’all to pray for us. Because I know y’all have seen her on the screen now. If there’s a 10, she’s a 15. Pray for me, keep my mind clear, keep my heart clear.”

Wilson added that he believes in God’s plan for his life, and his future life with Ciara.

“For me, I knew that God had brought me in her life to bless her and for her to bless me,” he said. “We’re not going to be perfect, by any means. But he’s anointed both of us and he’s calling for us to do something special.”

Movieguide® previously reported on the couple’s faith:

The eight-time Pro-Bowler encouraged his millions of followers to find peace in God via his social media accounts.

“Y’all ever go to bed, and you’re tossing and turning and can’t sleep? Your minds running … all these different things whether it’s big or small, whatever it may be, you can’t find that peace and a lot of times we’re trying to find the peace of me, the peace of you, the peace of us,” Wilson, 32, said.

He added: “What the Scripture says in Philippians 4:7, is the peace of God – the peace of God – that transcends all understanding. That’s the kind of peace that I want to have – the peace of God. I challenge us to try to search for that. And a lot of times what happens is that we run our own thoughts, our own ideas – we’re constantly thinking about what we want to do, how we want to fix it, how we want to handle this, and we want to do that.”

Wilson ended on a question, urging his followers to think about Christ.

“How about God, how about Jesus? What would He do? I think the biggest thing that we have to connect to is the promise of God,” Wilson said. “Actually, reading the Scripture and understanding what He wants for us and what He wants for me. I know for me personally, that’s what I’ve been working on. Not trying to find my own peace. I want the peace of God.”
