THOR director Kenneth Branagh is interested in creating a final standalone movie for the superhero to give the character an honorable MCU end.

“Part of me would love to finish my relationship with that character,” Branagh told Business Insider. “I’d always wanted to do more and indeed had a couple of ideas, more in the territory of James Mangold’s brilliant LOGAN. I would love to see Chris Hemsworth and the other have their own individual final story that takes Thor into a glorious twilight.”

While Branagh has a vision for the end of Thor’s story arc — which would bring it back to a grittier storyline if it were truly modeled upon LOGAN — he does not realistically expect to have that opportunity, understanding that Marvel has its plots planned out years in advance.

“They are so far deep into the future of the Marvel Universe that I’m sure whatever plans they have for it are already kind of set,” he said. “All I know is there’s something beautiful to be had out of arriving at a conclusion for that arc of those stories with those characters and those actors.”

This has been a point that Marvel has struggled with as it looks to move on from the original characters that built the franchise . Some of the characters are gone for good, such as Iron Man and Black Widow, but other characters have yet to retire or are gone for now but could always be brought back. The upcoming AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY movie, for example, is rumored to include Chris Evans’ Captain America even though he officially retired after AVENGERS: ENDGAME.

“You know, I always see those reports too, and it’s news to me,” Evans told THE VIEW in 2023. “I think every couple months someone says that they’re getting [Robert] Downey [Jr.] and [Chris] Hemsworth and Scarlett [Johansson], and everyone’s coming back! No one’s spoken to me about it.”

“[I] would never say never,” he continued, adding that he is “very protective” of Steve Rogers/Captain America. “It’s a very precious role to me, so it would have to be just right.”

Meanwhile, Marvel brought back Robert Downey Jr. to help draw audiences and drum up interest, although this time he will play Dr. Doom rather than his beloved Iron Man.

Whether Thor receives a proper sendoff or not remains to be seen. Until then, fans can see him pop into Marvel movies every once in a while, and he will likely play a significant role in the next Avengers movie, AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY.
