MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE: LIFE’S STILL UNFAIR creator Linwood Boomer revealed that a second season of the show is unlikely, but he isn’t writing it off.

“For now it is [done],” Boomer told TVLine. “I’m an old man. I’m very tired, but it was such a great experience, and I think creatively it worked. So, you never know. I don’t think it would have happened the way it happened if the idea was to do an entire series again.”

Frankie Muniz, who plays Malcolm, shared a similar sentiment — happy to have reprised the role but with an understanding that it was only for a short time.

“I’ll say this: I would love to be Malcolm again,” Muniz said. “[However,] the intention of this was just these four episodes. I don’t think it was made with the intention of being a test or that more could come from it, but you never know what will happen. If people love it, maybe. Originally, it was written as a movie. It would start and an hour-and-a-half later it would end and that would be it. But we’re calling it four episodes. It’s one storyline that goes over those four episodes. That was the [only] intention of filming this.”

Beyond a desire to honor the show and its creator’s wishes, filming a true full season of a show would be nearly impossible for Muniz as he is currently working as a NASCAR driver full time. He was barely able to even fit the filming of the four episode mini-series into his schedule.

“I would film Sunday through Wednesday, fly Thursday, race Friday and fly back Saturday,” Muniz told Entertainment Weekly earlier this year. “It was exhausting, but I also know how cool it is to have the opportunity to get to do this again, so I wasn’t going to complain at all. I am so thankful to everybody on the production for working around my NASCAR schedule.”

Despite how exhausting filming the reboot was, he couldn’t wait for fans to see it.

“We started talking about [a reboot] literally 10 years ago — me and [my costar] Bryan Cranston — and slowly been working at it and it’s finally a reality,” Muniz told PEOPLE. “So I’m really excited. I had to do some chemistry reads. I can’t tell you with what characters, but new characters that would be on the show. And it was so weird to go back and be with Linwood Boomer, the creator and Ken Kwapis, the director, and be back in that mindset. Oddly, it was right at home.”

MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE: LIFE’S STILL UNFAIR is now available to stream exclusively on Hulu. The four episode reboot brings many of the show’s most beloved characters back for a victory lap.
