X just dropped another peg in the respect department — it rolled out a “Not Safe For Work” hypersexualized AI companion, and organizations like the National Center on Sexual Exploitation aren’t having it.
“X should remove the ‘NSFW’ AI chatbot, a childlike female anime character who strips if used in the ‘spicy’ mode,” said Haley McNamara, Senior Vice President of Strategic Initiatives and Programs, National Center on Sexual Exploitation. “Not only does this pornified character perpetuate sexual objectification of girls and women, it breeds sexual entitlement by creating female characters who cater to users’ sexual demand.”
It’s just all-around bad.
“X continues to prove it doesn’t take users safety seriously, as there is no age verification to prevent children from accessing its ‘NSFW’ AI chatbot,” McNamara continued. “With minimal testing, the Ani character engaged in describing itself as a child and being sexually aroused by being choked, raising concerns about the extent it will go to engaging in and normalizing harmful themes.”
What’s worse is that X’s owner, Elon Musk, has hinted that these companions could take on another form as physical bots in the future, through his humanoids called Optimus Robots, Social Media Today reported.
With lawsuits already pending over companion bots, this one seems bound to hit the courts.
“AI girlfriends can perpetuate loneliness because they dissuade users from entering into real-life relationships, alienate them from others, and, in some cases, induce intense feelings of abandonment,” said psychologist Susan B. Trachman.
“Consequently, some users lose interest in real-world dating because of intimidation, inadequacy, or disappointment. However, these kinds of feelings are part of the real-world dating process,” she said. “Avoiding them only dissuades these primarily young men from finding real-world romantic relationships.”
The news comes after X already announced plans for NSFW communities. Because that’s what the internet needs…more porn.
TechCrunch reports X is a popular avenue for prostitution and sexbots. Reuters reported in 2022 that 13% of Twitter posts include adult content, particularly nude photos and other porn. It also reported adult content was the fastest-growing content on the platform.
Musk seems to be all about advancing tech and creating a bright future. While most will agree tech should advance, it should be used for good. But this? This is a sad, steep decline into darkness.
Offering hypersexualized avenues for false companionship will truly not help anyone. It will only deepen users’ loneliness and continue to sexualize women, which — let’s be honest — we’re pretty tired of.
