YOUNG WOMAN AND THE SEA Director Calls Daisy Ridley a ‘Force of Nature’
By Movieguide® Contributor
YOUNG WOMAN AND THE SEA director Joachim Rønning called star Daisy Ridley a “force of nature,” sharing that she spent so much time filming in the water that her lips turned blue.
“I wanted the actors to be in the water. I didn’t want blue screen or green screen, and I told Daisy Ridley this before we started shooting,” Rønning said in an interview with Yahoo Entertainment. “And she said, ‘Yeah, let’s do it.’”
The water scenes were filmed in the English Channel and the Black Sea in extremely cold water.
“She’s a force of nature,” Rønning continued. “She really got into it, and she was in the water. We were filming for weeks, and she would never complain, her lips blue.”
Ridley plays Trudy Ederle, a woman who “overcame adversity and the animosity of a patriarchal society to rise through the ranks of the Olympic swimming team and complete the staggering achievement – a 21-mile trek from France to England,” per a synopsis of the movie.
A portion of the Movieguide® review reads:
YOUNG WOMAN AND THE SEA is one of the best movies in a long time. It’s extremely well plotted, superbly directed and beautifully acted, with a rich musical score. YOUNG WOMAN AND THE SEA has a strong morally uplifting worldview with strong Christian, biblical references and values celebrating courage, forgiveness, loyalty, and fortitude. It also has references to prayer, church and the Hand of God. MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for younger children because of intense swimming scenes.
Ridley, who also served as an executive producer, spoke about what initially drew her to the project, saying, “Particularly now, to have a film that is joyful and hopeful and is real and really talks about triumphing over adversity, but centers on this family who love each other and support each other and want the best for each other, it feels like we could all do with that right now.”
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer agreed, adding, “Everybody’s looking for good entertainment. Everybody’s looking for something that takes them away from their lives for two hours and puts them in another world that they can be inspired by. You walk out, and you feel better than when you walked in. That’s what we do when we make movies, and that’s why we go to theaters — to have that group experience, and to be with other people who are laughing and crying along with us. That’s what we do. And look, we did it with TOP GUN: MAVERICK, and hopefully we’ll do it again with this.”
