MAN AND WITCH: THE DANCE OF A THOUSAND STEPS

What You Need To Know:

MAN AND WITCH: THE DANCE OF A THOUSAND STEPS is a comical fantasy movie. It boasts a cast of acclaimed character actors, including Sean Astin, Christopher Lloyd and Michael Emerson. The story follows the life of a goatherd who lives with his mother. He learns that he was cursed at birth to never be able to have a wife. Accompanied by three animal companions, a dog, a goose and a sheep, the goatherd seeks the dwelling of a witch. The witch promises him she can break his curse, so long as he completes three impossible tasks.

MAN AND WITCH is mildly funny, but the movie’s positives stop there. The movie tries to subvert the classic tale of the farm boy marrying the princess. However, it does so in an unsatisfying, grossly immoral, unbiblical way. The movie’s climactic ending is politically correct and includes a lesbian kiss. Also, Sean Astin, Christopher Lloyd and Michael Emerson have very little screen time. Even with more screen time, however, they could not have saved this trainwreck. Media-wise movie fans will want to skip MAN AND WITCH.

Content:

(B, O, Pa, HoHo, L, V, SS, M):

Dominant Worldview and Other Worldview Content/Elements:
Mixed worldview with a few positive, moral elements, marred by occult and pagan elements, the hero character is loyal and exemplifies sacrifice and doing what is right for the sake of love, but other character motivations for love are flawed by greed, objectification and unbiblical views of love, the most prominent is that the queen decides not to marry a prince, but choose to marry her friend who is a girl, there are many occult elements including evil wizard cursing children and a witch misusing magic, chants and other forms of fantasy magic;

Foul Language:
No obscenities, but one character says, “God, you’re weird”;

Violence:
While the action adventure violence is campy, and little blood is shown, there are some scenes with blood, a man poisons ogres, and they explode in a green cloud of dust, an ogre is cut with a sword, and green blood is seen, and the ogres and the evil wizard could scare younger audiences;

Sex:
The movie is in large part a romance, so there are mild flirting scenes and a chivalric idea to finding love, but the ending promotes homosexuality and includes a lesbian kiss, with an immoral and anachronistic comment about how everyone should get to choose whom they love;

Nudity:
No sexual nudity, but there’s upper male nudity when one character is asked to strip to his underwear so that the magic works;

No alcohol use;

Miscellaneous Immorality:
Aside from the central character, motivations for love are selfish, resulting in characters lying to one another throughout the movie.

More Detail:

MAN AND WITCH: THE DANCE OF A THOUSAND STEPS is a new fantasy movie starring several acclaimed character actors such as Sean Astin, Christopher Lloyd and Michael Emerson. It follows the life of a goatherd, who learns that he was cursed at birth to never be able to have a wife. Despite his efforts, and his mother’s nagging, his efforts at love and chivalry are always met with spectacular failure.

Once he learns of his curse, the goatherd sets out on a hero’s journey to find a witch who can help break the curse. The witch promises him she can break the curse and find the goatherd a wife, so long as he completes three impossible challenges.

To her surprise, the goatherd completes the first challenge. The witch, realizing that she may be trying to double-cross the wrong person, uses the goatherd to achieve her own goals.

Will he be able to break the curse and find love? Or will the witch’s schemes succeed?

MAN AND WITCH is akin to MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL, minus the gore, in its aim for a comedic take on the classic story of farm boys, kings, queens, knights, and monsters. It tries to subvert the genre in both its comedy and overall plot but fails miserably due to a flawed ending with a wicked worldview.

The biggest victim to the movie’s failed attempts to subvert the genre is the theme of love. Only the goatherd has pure intentions for love. However, the movie’s ending pushes him aside. It then inserts a non-Christian, immoral, politically correct vision of love that promotes homosexuality and includes a lesbian kiss.

Aside from its worldview problems, the movie’s production values are abysmal, with incomplete-looking visual effects, poor pacing and odd camera work. Despite its standout cast, Sean Astin, Christian Lloyd and Michael Emerson only have a few scenes.

There’s a reason the quest for love in a medieval setting is a common theme in movies. It’s because people respond favorably to biblical ideas of love and themes of chivalry. Such ideas and themes are morally uplifting and ultimately transcendent.

Sadly, MAN AND WITCH’s subversion of the genre leaves viewers with a lukewarm portrayal of valor and an immoral portrayal of love. The ending is unsatisfying, disappointing and, ultimately, annoying. Media-wise movie fans will want to skip MAN AND WITCH. Don’t be fooled by the movie’s posters and ads. The movie’s woke ending destroys any positive vibe they appear to be sending.
