THE GOOD THIEF starts off slowly, in a sleazy fashion. The movie opens in a strip club, where Bob sneaks off to shoot heroin while losing at cards. Eventually, as the movie concentrates on the heist, the sleaze factor lowers a bit, and the story becomes engrossing, with a fine performance by Nolte as the wisecracking thief. Regrettably, however, though one heist is foiled, another heist succeeds, and gambling and murder are rewarded. THE GOOD THIEF also contains lots of strong foul language and some nudity.

THE GOOD THIEF starring Nick Nolte is based on a famous acclaimed French movie. Nolte plays Bob, an ex-thief turned gambler and heroin addict plying his trade on the French Riviera. Bob is on a big losing streak at the opening of the movie. When Bob hears about some priceless paintings stored in an underground vault at a casino, he quits cold turkey and leads a gang of thieves planning to steal the paintings. The casino cannot afford to report the theft because it has fake copies of the paintings on its walls in order to attract customers.
Only one problem prevents these thieves from getting away with their crime. A suspicious cop is following Bob all the time. Bob comes up with a devious plan, however, to fool the cop. Unfortunately, things start to come undone. Meanwhile, in the casino Bob starts to gamble.
